Mini LED TVs with truly premium features usually start well above the 20,000 CZK mark. However, you can get the TCL 55C89K right now for 19,990 CZK instead of the original 25,990 CZK – and this is the lowest price this model has been sold for since January. It boasts a refresh rate of up to 144 Hz, 60W Bang & Olufsen speakers, and 720 local dimming zones.

Quick summary:
Makes sense if you are looking for a 55″ TV with Mini LED backlighting, Dolby Vision support, and gaming features at a reasonable price.
⚠️ Consider if you prefer OLED with perfect blacks or need a TV that doesn’t require picture tuning out of the box.
💡 For 19,990 CZK you get 720 local dimming zones, HDMI 2.1 with VRR, and 60W Bang & Olufsen speakers – features that often mean a higher price tag from competitors.

Why this TV is interesting

The TCL 55C89K belongs to the category of Mini LED TVs, which combine high brightness with more precise local dimming than conventional LED models. In practice, this means deeper blacks in dark scenes and simultaneously high brightness in bright areas of the picture – something you don’t get with classic LED TVs without local dimming.

The TV offers 720 dimming zones, which is an above-average value for this price category. Additionally, TCL uses All-domain Halo Control technology, which aims to eliminate the so-called “halo effect” – light flares around bright objects on a dark background, which is often a weakness of cheaper Mini LED models.

Picture: what to expect

The panel has a resolution of 3840 × 2160 pixels (4K Ultra HD) and uses HVA (High Viewing Angle) technology with an anti-reflective coating. In practice, this means better viewing angles than conventional VA panels and fewer reflections in bright rooms. The refresh rate is 100/120 Hz natively, and up to 144 Hz in gaming mode.

Supported HDR formats include HDR10, HDR10+, HLG, Dolby Vision, and Dolby Vision IQ. The latter automatically adjusts the picture to ambient lighting – according to user reviews, the TV performs best in this mode without the need for manual tuning. The TV is also certified as IMAX Enhanced and supports Filmmaker Mode for an authentic cinematic experience.

The AiPQ Pro processor is responsible for image processing, offering upscaling of lower resolutions, and optimization of colors and contrast according to content type. MEMC (Motion Estimation & Motion Compensation) technology calculates intermediate frames for smoother display of fast-moving scenes.

Practical aspects: connectivity, sound, gaming features

The TV offers 4× HDMI (including HDMI 2.1), 1× USB, and a CI+ slot for receiving encrypted broadcasts. For gamers, support for ALLM (Auto Low Latency Mode) and VRR (Variable Refresh Rate) with FreeSync Premium Pro certification is important. The Game Master feature automatically recognizes a connected console and switches to optimal settings with minimal latency.

The sound system consists of 60W speakers tuned in collaboration with Bang & Olufsen with support for Dolby Atmos and DTS:X. The TV has a built-in subwoofer, which is rather an exception for models in this price category. It also supports the Multisound feature – simultaneous audio output to speakers and wireless headphones with independent volume control.

The system runs on the Google TV platform with access to the Google Play Store, voice control via Google Assistant, and support for both Chromecast and Apple AirPlay 2. The remote control is backlit. The VESA standard is 300 × 300 mm, but note that the mounting holes are not exactly in the center of the TV.

What users say

On Alza, the TV has a rating of 4.5 out of 5 (18 ratings) and 83% of customers recommend it. Over 200 units have already been sold. Users most often praise the picture quality in Dolby Vision, surprisingly good sound from the built-in speakers, and the overall price/performance ratio. One reviewer explicitly states that the TV “cured” him of the belief that the next choice must only be OLED.

Critical voices mainly arise concerning the need to fine-tune the picture in HDR and SDR modes – in Dolby Vision IQ, it works automatically well according to reviews, but other modes require some time playing with the settings. One user mentions a problem with rattling speakers, another points out occasional app freezing in Google TV. The stand is plastic and feels cheaper than what would be appropriate for the TV’s price.

When it doesn’t make sense

If you are looking for perfect blacks without any light bleed, Mini LED technology won’t give you that – for that, you need OLED. However, a 55″ version with similar features costs significantly more. Likewise, if you prefer a TV that looks perfect right out of the box without any tuning, you might be frustrated by the need to play with the picture settings.

For users who need a reliable system without occasional freezes, an alternative might be to consider a model with a different operating system or complement the TV with an external device like Apple TV or Nvidia Shield.

Verdict: who it’s worth it for

The TCL 55C89K is a TV for those who want Mini LED technology with premium features at the price of regular LED models. For 19,990 CZK, you get 720 local dimming zones, HDMI 2.1 with VRR, quality Bang & Olufsen speakers, and full support for HDR formats including Dolby Vision. Additionally, a 6-month SledovaniTV subscription is included in the package. On the other hand, if you require the perfect blacks of an OLED panel or a TV without the need for tuning, it’s worth looking elsewhere – just expect a higher price tag.

Do you have experience with Mini LED TVs, or are you still considering switching to OLED?
