Gaming tablets are still a niche segment where manufacturers primarily compete in refresh rate and chipset performance. However, what has leaked about the upcoming RedMagic Gaming Tablet 5 Pro raises the bar to a level where no one else stands yet. At least on paper. Moreover, such a tablet will certainly be perfectly usable for work and other entertainment, not just gaming.

200 Hz display as an answer to Lenovo

The well-known Chinese leaker Digital Chat Station published a post on Weibo, indicating that the new RedMagic tablet will feature a 200Hz OLED display. This is not a random number — it’s a direct response to the Lenovo Legion Tab Gen 5, which boasts a 165 Hz refresh rate. RedMagic thus aims to be unequivocally the fastest in this regard.

current RedMagic Astra:

The exact diagonal has not yet been confirmed, but the predecessor, the RedMagic Gaming Tablet 3 Pro (known in global distribution as RedMagic Astra), had a 9-inch panel. A similar compact format can therefore be expected, which is significantly more comfortable for handheld gaming than large 11″ or 13″ tablets.

Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 in a tablet? That hasn’t happened yet

According to the same leak, the tablet is to be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 — a chipset we’ve only known exclusively from flagship phones so far. In the Geekbench benchmark, it surpasses the 10,000-point mark, and graphics are handled by the Adreno 840. In the context of a gaming tablet, this means it theoretically shouldn’t have any problem with any current mobile title, or even PC game emulation.

9,000 mAh battery sounds better than it will perform

The leak also mentions a 9,000 mAh battery. At first glance, a decent number, but in combination with a powerful chipset and a 200Hz OLED panel, it can be expected that battery life will be rather average during intense gaming. For comparison — tablets with less demanding hardware and similar battery capacity typically last a full day. Here, it will heavily depend on how aggressively Android manages power consumption and whether RedMagic offers reasonable power-saving profiles.

When and for how much?

RedMagic has already officially confirmed that it is working on a successor to the Gaming Tablet 3 Pro. However, the launch date for the Chinese market has not yet been announced, and global availability — likely again under a different name — will come with further delay. The price is also unknown, but given the hardware used, it can be assumed that it will not be a cheap affair.

As with any pre-release leak, specifications may change in the final version. Nevertheless, it’s interesting to observe where gaming tablets are heading — while regular tablets compete in thinner bezels and better cameras, the gaming segment pulls in the opposite direction, focusing purely on performance and display speed. Whether customers will appreciate this will only be shown by sales figures.

Would a gaming tablet with a 200Hz display interest you, or is a phone enough for your gaming needs?
