TP-Link is starting to sell a new security camera, the Tapo C400, in the Czech Republic. It is battery-powered and primarily designed for outdoor use. For a recommended price of 1,599 CZK, it offers Full HD resolution, AI-powered person detection, and a battery life of up to half a year. The camera operates without constant electrical power and complex wiring, which will be appreciated by homeowners with gardens or remote garages.

Half a Year of Operation on a Single Charge

The Tapo C400 is equipped with a 5,200 mAh battery, which, according to the manufacturer, lasts up to 180 days with typical use (250 seconds per day). Actual battery life, of course, depends on usage intensity, the number of recorded events, and temperature conditions. For continuous operation, an optional solar panel can be purchased to continuously recharge the battery.

The wireless design allows the camera to be installed virtually anywhere – on a fence near the gate, a garage wall, or even a tree in the garden. Connection is via Wi-Fi without the need for a special hub or base station.

Person Recognition Without Fees

The camera uses AI algorithms for person detection, distinguishing people from animals, leaves, or other movements. This feature is available for free without the need for a monthly subscription. In the Tapo app, you can set custom activity zones, for example, to monitor only the driveway and ignore the sidewalk in front of the house.

For privacy protection, the camera offers the option to define privacy zones that will not be included in recordings or live streams. Useful, for example, for obscuring a neighbor’s property or parts of your own garden.

Color Image Even at Night

The Tapo C400 records video in Full HD 1080p resolution (1920 × 1080 pixels). In the dark, it uses color night vision with a range of several meters, or classic infrared imaging for more discreet monitoring. The integrated LED light can be used as a spotlight upon motion detection.

It includes two-way audio with a microphone and speaker for communication with visitors. The camera also features a built-in siren that can be activated manually or automatically upon intruder detection.

Local and Cloud Storage

Recordings are stored on a microSD card up to 512 GB (sold separately). A 128 GB card can hold approximately 208 hours of footage, while the largest 512 GB variant can hold up to 832 hours. An alternative is the Tapo Care cloud service with 30-day recording history for a monthly fee.

Data is encrypted using 128-bit AES, and transmissions are secured with SSL/TLS protocols. The camera supports integration with voice assistants Google Assistant, Amazon Alexa, and Samsung SmartThings.

Year-Round Outdoor Operation

Thanks to IP65 rating, the camera withstands rain, snow, and dust. It operates in temperatures from -20 °C to +45 °C, so it can handle Czech winters and summer heat. Installation is simple using the included wall or ceiling mount.
