TP-Link Tapo C125 indoor camera records in 2K and sees even at night. Now it costs four hundred less

A camera in the living room or a child’s room is a practical thing, but I was always a bit bothered by that black eye looking into the room, even when you turn it off in the app. The Tapo C125 solves this in the simplest way – a physical cover hides the lens. With code ALZADNY20, you can now get it on Alza for 1,679 CZK instead of 2,099 CZK, which is 420 CZK cheaper.

Quick summary:
✅ Makes sense if you want a camera for your apartment with 2K image and smart notifications, but don’t want the lens to be open even when you don’t need it.
⚠️ Consider that the camera does not rotate on its own, connects only to 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, and needs a power outlet nearby.
💡 For 1,679 CZK you get a lens cover, invisible night vision illumination, and Apple Home support, but you’ll need to purchase a memory card separately.

What the Tapo C125 sees by day and by night

The TP-Link Tapo C125 records images in 2K QHD resolution (2,560 × 1,440 px), which is sharper than basic Full HD cameras – you’ll more easily distinguish a face or what the dog is chewing on in the recording. The wide-angle lens offers a 140° field of view, so it usually covers most of the space from a corner of the room. However, the camera is fixed. You can only turn it by hand; it won’t rotate on its own to follow movement.

After dark, it switches to infrared illumination with a range of up to 9 meters. A clever detail is the choice between classic 850nm diodes and invisible 940nm illumination, which does not glow red at night. The manufacturer recommends it mainly for monitoring sleeping children and pets, who might be disturbed by a red light.

Notifications are sorted by AI detection of people and pets. The manufacturer also mentions vehicle recognition, which you probably won’t use much with an indoor camera. Parents will appreciate detection of unusual sounds, such as a baby crying. In addition, you can set activity zones and line-crossing detection so that notifications only come from places that matter to you.

The camera also features a physical cover that mechanically hides the lens. You can close it with a button directly on the camera or remotely in the Tapo app. Compared to simply turning off recording, it has one big advantage: a closed lens is visible at first glance, so you, your partner, and visitors know that the camera isn’t seeing anything at the moment. For a device meant to hang in the living room, I find this more useful than another smart feature.

Installation, power, and recording storage

Anyone can handle the installation. The camera is held by a magnetic base with a flexible bracket, so you can easily move and angle it as needed; mounting hardware is included in the package. However, it doesn’t run on battery; it’s powered by the mains. The manufacturer therefore includes a long power cable, but you should still have an outlet reasonably close by.

It stores recordings on a microSD card with a capacity of up to 512 GB, which needs to be purchased separately, or in the Tapo Care cloud for a subscription. Through the built-in microphone and speaker, you can talk both ways with the camera, and upon detecting movement, it can trigger an audible and visual alarm. You can even record your own siren sound.

Connectivity is provided by 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi; the manufacturer also mentions Wi-Fi 6 support for more stable live streaming. It is controlled by the Tapo app for Android and iOS, and you can also integrate the camera into Apple Home, Amazon Alexa, or Google Home, so you can control it by voice.

Who won’t find the C125 sufficient?

If you want to oversee an entire room with one camera and expect it to track movement by rotating, the C125 will disappoint you – a 140° angle is simply the limit. A pan-tilt model, such as the Tapo TC72, which we wrote about in September, is more suitable for that. Also, do not place the C125 outdoors; it is an indoor camera and does not belong on a balcony or near a gate. And if you don’t need a lens cover, look for simpler indoor models where you won’t pay extra for it.

Verdict: Why buy the TP-Link Tapo C125?

The Tapo C125 looks like a good camera for the home. Invisible illumination and cry detection make it a good candidate for a baby monitor, while the cover reassures anyone bothered by the idea of a permanently open lens. For 1,679 CZK with code ALZADNY20, I would go for it if a fixed view is sufficient for you. Anyone who wants the camera to rotate to follow movement, or is looking for something to monitor their yard, should look elsewhere.

Do you have a camera at home that’s always watching, or would you also prefer to close the lens?
