Two legends meet! A modder ported Minecraft to PlayStation 2, the result is surprisingly good Home News A developer ported Minecraft Pocket Edition to PlayStation 2, without any hardware modifications to the console The port, named OptiCraft, runs on 32 MB of RAM at over 30 frames per second You can also run it in PS2 emulators on Windows or Android Sdílejte: Jakub Kárník Published: 20. 6. 2026 06:30 Advertisement With over 160 million units sold, PlayStation 2 is the most successful gaming console in history. Minecraft, on the other hand, is the best-selling video game of all time, if we disregard the eternal Tetris. Two legends that nevertheless never officially met – the blocky game was released on Sony consoles only with PlayStation 3 in 2013. Fifteen years after Minecraft’s release, this historical debt was paid by an enthusiast known as OptiJogos. 32 megabytes of RAM and still over 30 fps You can play even without the console 32 megabytes of RAM and still over 30 fps Attempts to get Minecraft on PS2 (and even the first PlayStation) existed before, but they required modified hardware, or they were games written from scratch. This port, christened OptiCraft, runs on a completely unmodified console. The developer started from the recently leaked source code of the game and chose Pocket Edition version 0.6 – infinite worlds simply wouldn’t be handled by the aging hardware. The toughest nut to crack was adapting the rendering to the console’s graphics chip, which he solved with custom-written OpenGL code. With only 32 megabytes of RAM, he then had to deal with a series of clever tricks. The game renders only what is directly in front of you, it runs entirely in reduced resolution, some animations are turned off, and the console freezes unnecessary functions during gameplay. Effects like smooth lighting or vignetting also had to go. The result is a smooth and playable version of Minecraft that stays above 30 frames per second. An admirable performance for hardware from 2000. You can play even without the console If you still have an old PS2 at home, you can download OptiCraft and run it directly on it. And if not, you can run the ELF file in any PlayStation 2 emulator – for example, AetherSX2 on Android. The retro community thus received further proof that with enough patience and skill, you can run anything anywhere. Would you try Minecraft on PlayStation 2, or do you no longer appreciate similar retro experiments?
