We have the first information about Redmi news: Even cheaper Xiaomi phones will skip the number 16

When Xiaomi’s lineup followed models with the number 15 with flagship Xiaomi 17 models, it was interpreted as a clear sign that the Chinese giant is not afraid to compare itself with current iPhones bearing the same number. Quite logically, the 17T series then followed, where the “T” models represent a cheaper alternative to the flagships, and if this numbering were not followed, it could confuse customers. However, it seems that the number 16 is also out for new Redmi phones.

The number 17 will also prevail for new Redmi phones

According to initial information from the databases of the US telecommunications authority FCC and the Singaporean regulator IMDA, Xiaomi, or rather its sub-brand Redmi, is preparing a new generation of its affordable model. It should bear the designation Redmi 17 4G. It can therefore be assumed that this step will also be followed by slightly better-equipped – and currently more popular – models from the Redmi Note series. With this change, Xiaomi would thus unify the numbering across both brands for new Redmi phones.

As for the specific features of the upcoming Redmi 17 4G, we know very little so far. Data from the IMDA regulator speaks of wireless connectivity, where at least 5GHz Wi-Fi and NFC support are a plus. As for the data from the American FCC, it mentions memory variants of 4 /128 GB, 6 /128 GB, 6 / 256 GB, 6 / 512 GB, 8 / 256 GB, and surprisingly also 8 / 512 GB. Naturally, not every version will reach all markets. We do not yet have information on availability or the presentation date.
