Samsung continues to improve its One UI overlay, and the latest leaked beta versions of One UI 8.5 bring an interesting extension to the adaptive clock function on the lock screen. While in the current One UI 8.0, the clock can only react to people and animals, the new version recognizes all types of objects in the wallpaper.

Smarter Clocks for Every Background

The main new feature of One UI 8.5 is an improved object recognition algorithm. The clock can now identify not only people and pets, but also flowers, hot air balloons, cars, and practically any other elements in the background. As a result, it will automatically shrink or move aside so as not to obscure important parts of the image.

Known leaker Ice Universe published a video on YouTube showing the feature in action. The clock seamlessly changes its size and position depending on the background you choose. Samsung has also added a frosted glass effect and the ability to automatically select harmonious colors that match the wallpaper.

Significant Advancement Compared to One UI 8.0

In the current version of One UI 8.0, adaptive clocks function only in a limited mode. The system can recognize people and animals and adjust the time display accordingly. However, if you have a landscape, architecture, or abstract motif in the background, the clock remains in its standard position and size.

The new version addresses this shortcoming. One UI 8.5 uses more advanced image analysis that identifies main objects in any type of background. The clock then dynamically changes not only its size, but also the orientation and layout of individual elements. Each part of the clock can move independently, creating interesting visual effects.

One UI 8.5 vs iOS 26: Samsung’s Solution Appears Better

Apple introduced a similar feature in iOS 26, where the clock can disappear behind objects in the wallpaper. While this approach looks effective, it has a practical disadvantage – the time can be harder to read because it is partially obscured. Samsung chose a different path: the clock always remains fully visible, only adapting to its surroundings.

Another advantage of Samsung is support for various font styles. While iOS offers only one font, Galaxy phone users can choose from several options. One UI 8.5 also adds full control over the clock size, which can be set manually.

When Can We Expect One UI 8.5?

The first One UI 8.5 beta program is expected to launch at the end of November 2025. Samsung will thus have enough time to fine-tune all new features before the official release. The final version of One UI 8.5 will arrive early next year along with the Galaxy S26 series.
