We saw the Xiaomi Vision GT live! You wouldn't expect such a crazy hypercar concept from a mobile phone manufacturer

  • At MWC 2026 in Barcelona, we took a close look at the Xiaomi Vision Gran Turismo – an electric hypercar concept for the world of Gran Turismo
  • The "Sculpted by the Wind" design prioritizes aerodynamics: channels, vents, and an extreme silhouette are not just for show
  • The biggest shock is the interior, specifically the steering wheel, which feels more like a simulator controller, and the seats

MWC is usually all about phones, networks, and AI. But this year in Barcelona, Xiaomi is showing that its ambitions are broader than just “another flagship”. At the booth, we got a close look at the Xiaomi Vision Gran Turismo – an electric hypercar concept designed for the Gran Turismo game series, which is meant to be playable directly in Gran Turismo 7. And live, it looks exactly as it should: as a demonstration that Xiaomi takes the world of cars seriously.

Sculpted by the Wind: when design serves aerodynamics

With the Vision GT, Xiaomi reiterates one idea: “Sculpted by the Wind”. Translated into reality – most shapes on the bodywork have an aerodynamic purpose. Up close, the vents and channels, extremely low profile, and sharp lines that optically “press” the car to the ground stand out. It’s not just about an aggressive look, but about an effort to get air exactly where the car needs it – and conversely, to remove it where it would increase drag.

Details such as the specifically shaped areas around the wheels, the dramatic rear diffuser, and prominent air channeling suggest that Xiaomi wanted to create a concept that is technically credible, not just an effective shell. Whether anything more than a “VGT car for a game” will ever come of it, no one can confirm today. But as a showcase of philosophy, it works great.

The cockpit is the strangest: a “sofa” instead of seats

But the biggest surprise comes inside. Xiaomi describes the interior as a “Sofa Racer”, and it makes sense – instead of traditional seats, the cabin feels like a cocoon sofa that envelops the occupants. Add to that a butterfly steering wheel and a wide display, which gives the feeling of sitting in a premium simulator rather than a car.

This is a concept designed to provoke a reaction – and that’s clearly what Xiaomi wants on European soil ahead of future expansion.

Technology largely remains a secret for now

With concepts, it’s fair to stick to what’s actually confirmed. Information about a 900V architecture and speculations about extreme performance have appeared in the media, but Xiaomi had not released complete specifications at the time of writing. From the perspective of an MWC visitor, however, something else is more important: the Vision GT is a clear signal that Xiaomi wants to be perceived in the automotive world as a brand with its own technological identity, not just “another EV manufacturer”.

Why Xiaomi is showing it at MWC in Barcelona

This year, Xiaomi is pushing the “Human × Car × Home” ecosystem concept – the interconnection of personal devices, home, and mobility. And the Vision Gran Turismo is an ideal magnet: it attracts attention, provides a strong visual story, and at the same time shows that Xiaomi thinks of a car as another “platform” it wants to integrate into its world.

Moreover, live, the car doesn’t come across as a cheap attraction. It’s clear that Xiaomi addressed the proportions, surfaces, and “flow” of the lines so that the concept looked credible even from a meter away. And that’s exactly what you want when building a reputation in a segment where people traditionally trust established car manufacturers more.

Conclusion: a crazy concept, but a logical move

The Xiaomi Vision Gran Turismo is extreme – and that’s precisely why it makes sense. In the gaming world of Gran Turismo, there’s room for cars that might never pass homologation in reality. Xiaomi uses this as a platform to showcase design, aerodynamics, and the idea of “a car as part of an ecosystem”. And if players can really try it out in Gran Turismo 7, it will be more visible for the brand in the long run than any press conference.

Is this the future of cars for you, or too much sci-fi?
