WhatsApp introduces Message Summaries! Quick summaries of unread messages will be provided by Meta AI

It happens to everyone sometimes that they don’t have time to read all messages in conversations in detail. WhatsApp’s new feature called Message Summaries therefore offers a solution we’ve seen a few times from other companies. By utilizing Meta AI’s artificial intelligence, it can quickly and, most importantly, privately summarize the content of unread messages, which helps with faster orientation directly in the chat.

The new feature is based on Private Processing technology, which generates summaries directly on your device. This means Meta should never see the content of your messages or summaries through the app.

Furthermore, other conversation users will not see that you have had the messages summarized. And if you’re not entirely keen on the new feature, you can, of course, keep it turned off at any time; its use is entirely voluntary. Otherwise, the feature can be turned on in the settings.

What is the availability of message summaries in WhatsApp?

Currently, the new feature is only available in the English version of the app for users living in the USA. Meta, however, plans to offer the feature in other languages and countries during this year, so we will likely see it here eventually as well.
