Will hell freeze over? Apple is reportedly adding a popular Google feature it long ignored to iOS 27

For many years, AirPlay has been synonymous with wireless sharing of audiovisual content from Apple devices to TVs, speaker systems, and similar devices. However, Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, a long-time reliable source of news (especially) concerning the Cupertino giant, has come up with a very interesting piece of news. With the arrival of iOS 27, Apple should allow the use of alternative services for sharing this content – specifically mentioning Google Cast.

Apple yields to EU pressure in iOS 27

This streaming protocol from Google is then expected to be present in iPhones and iPads not only as an alternative to Apple AirPlay, but the user will even have the option to choose a default, preferred service. If you’re wondering what’s behind such a sudden change in Apple’s approach to third-party services, it’s nothing other than the Digital Markets Act (DMA for short). With this regulation, the EU is trying to regulate the monopoly of large players, such as Apple and Google.

Earlier, under the DMA regulation, Apple had to open its ecosystem to applications from sources other than the official App Store. Google, in turn, had to stop prioritizing its own services in its search engine in the EU. Regarding the probable support for other streaming protocols, it is not yet clear whether this new option will appear outside the EU, but it is quite likely. Similarly, openness to other streaming protocols does not only concern Google Cast but also other third-party solutions. The premiere of iOS 27 is expected as early as June 8.
