The first update of 2026 for Windows 11 turned out exactly as you wouldn’t expect from Microsoft – and yet you should have. The security patch from January 13 caused some computers to refuse to shut down obediently. Instead of shutting down, they restarted. Hibernation? That didn’t work either. And that’s not all.

Shut down? We can’t do that now

After installing update KB5050009, some Windows 11 23H2 computers started ignoring the shutdown command. You press “Shut down”, the system pretends to comply – and then restarts. The problem affects devices with System Guard Secure Launch functionality, which is designed to protect the system from threats during startup.

A second bug affected a wider range of users. Remote Desktop sign-ins stopped working – not only on Windows 11 23H2, but also on Windows 11 25H2, Windows 10 22H2 ESU, and Windows Server 2025. For companies relying on remote management, this was indeed an unpleasant complication.

The fix is already out

Microsoft reacted relatively quickly. Just four days after the problematic update, it released emergency fixes KB5077744 and KB5077797. Both are available via Windows Update and should return everything to normal – both shutdowns and remote sign-ins.

If for some reason you cannot update immediately and need to shut down your computer, there is a temporary solution. Open Command Prompt and enter shutdown /s /t 0 – the system will shut down correctly. You can even create a desktop shortcut for this until Microsoft definitively resolves the situation.

Have you been affected by any of the latest bugs in Windows 11?
