Last September, Xiaomi surprised with a pair of phones, the Xiaomi 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max, which primarily impressed with a large rear display surrounding the camera module. Now, the first speculations about their successors are starting to emerge, and it seems the Chinese manufacturer plans to continue the established trend – and add a significant camera upgrade.

Two 200Mpx Sensors?

According to information from leaker Digital Chat Station, the Xiaomi 18 Pro is expected to offer a 200Mpx main camera combined with a 200Mpx periscopic telephoto lens. Compared to the current 17 Pro model, which features 50Mpx sensors, this would represent a fourfold increase in resolution.

It is not yet clear whether the major upgrade will be in terms of sensor size or optics. However, these factors are particularly important for night photography.

Larger Battery in a Compact Body

The Xiaomi 18 Pro is expected to retain its 6.3″ display, making it a relatively compact flagship. Despite this, it should house a 7,000 mAh battery, representing a 700 mAh increase over its predecessor. Wireless charging and an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint reader are also expected. The phone should meet IP68/IP69 certification.

Rear Display Remains

Good news for fans of unconventional design is that Xiaomi is reportedly retaining the rear display for the 18 series. This is not a given – fitting a larger battery, bulkier cameras, and an auxiliary screen into a compact body requires ingenious engineering. Under the hood, the as-yet-unannounced Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 chipset is expected to power the device.

When Can We Expect It?

If Xiaomi adheres to last year’s schedule, the new series should be released in China in September. However, it is unlikely that the Pro models would arrive beyond the domestic market and go on sale, for example, in the Czech Republic. It is expected that the manufacturer will only bring the base model and the Ultra camera phone to Europe.

Did the rear display on the Xiaomi 17 Pro appeal to you, or do you consider it unnecessary?
