Chinese technology giant Xiaomi has expanded its smart home portfolio with a new lock model, the Smart Door Lock M40 Pro. This premium new product stands out primarily for its combination of biometric technologies and an advanced camera system, which allows users to monitor activity in front of the door directly on the built-in display. In China, the lock sells for 3,799 yuan (approximately 11,300 CZK), but customers can save money during the pre-sale at a price of 3,229 yuan (about 9,600 CZK).

Dual cameras and a large display for maximum overview

The Xiaomi Smart Door Lock M40 Pro features a 5-inch HD display located on the inside of the lock, which shows images from a pair of integrated cameras. The main 3Mpx camera with a 175° field of view is complemented by a secondary 2Mpx sensor with a 128° angle, together creating a panoramic view of the area in front of the door without blind spots.

For night monitoring, the lock is equipped with six LED diodes, which ensure a high-quality image even in complete darkness. The system offers several night vision modes, including color display and infrared imaging.

Twelve unlocking methods, including vein pattern recognition

The most interesting feature of the new lock is AI palm vein pattern recognition, which uses infrared light to scan the vascular system of the hand. This technology works contactlessly and addresses issues with worn fingerprints in older individuals or height limitations for children.

The lock also supports 3D facial recognition with liveness detection, classic fingerprint reading, password entry (long-term, periodic, or one-time), and remote unlocking via an app. Owners of Xiaomi devices can also use unlocking via a smartphone, watch, or band via Bluetooth or NFC (these features require the purchase of accessories).

Quiet operation and high security

Xiaomi has developed its own automatic lock mechanism with noise suppression, which ensures quiet door locking after closing. Security is guaranteed by a Class C lock cylinder running through the entire lock body – this is the highest level of protection used in China.

For emergency situations, a classic mechanical key is available, which allows entry even in the event of a power outage or drained batteries.

Long endurance with continuous power option

The Smart Door Lock M40 Pro uses dual power – a lithium battery lasts 4.5 months and backup alkaline batteries last another 6 months, totaling up to 10.5 months of endurance. After the lithium battery is depleted, the system automatically switches to alkaline batteries, temporarily disabling some advanced features like the camera system or facial recognition.

An interesting new feature is the option for continuous wired power from inside the apartment. If you have an electrical outlet near the door, you can power the lock continuously and eliminate worries about recharging. In an emergency, the lock can also be charged from the outside via a USB-C port or by using wireless reverse charging from a compatible phone.

Whether the Xiaomi Smart Door Lock M40 Pro will reach European markets is not yet clear. While Xiaomi does bring some smart home products to our regions, advanced locks usually remain exclusive to the Chinese market. However, it hasn’t been long since Xiaomi unveiled the Self-Install Smart Lock, which it plans to send to countries outside its homeland.
