Xiaomi President Lu Weibing yesterday evening, during a live stream, unveiled the design of the upcoming flagship Xiaomi 17 Pro and compared it with the recently launched iPhone 17 Pro. During the stream, he responded to fan questions regarding the alleged similarity of the two phones and showed the first real images of the new model.

Horizontal strip with display heads to the phone’s back

Xiaomi 17 Pro will primarily impress with its horizontally oriented strip, which will occupy approximately one third of the phone’s rear side. This design element will house not only the camera array but, more importantly, a secondary touch display with extensive customization options.

The rear display will offer practical use – it will be possible to take selfies with it using the main cameras, which will ensure significantly higher quality self-portraits than a standard front camera. The screen will display notifications, widgets, and other customizable content according to user preferences.

Response to iPhone similarity? We’ve been using this design since 2021

During the presentation, Lu Weibing responded to comments about the similarity with the iPhone 17 Pro’s design. According to him, Xiaomi already used the large rectangular camera module in the Mi 11 Ultra model from 2021, long before current trends.

The head of Xiaomi’s mobile division admitted that smartphone design has significantly unified in recent years. The front sides of phones are practically indistinguishable, which is why manufacturers are primarily experimenting with the rear side. According to Lu Weibing, the secondary display on the Xiaomi 17 Pro represents a way to bring something truly new and practical to the market.

The Xiaomi 17 Pro will be officially unveiled later this month, alongside the standard Xiaomi 17 version. Both models are expected to feature the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 processor and an improved camera setup in collaboration with Leica.
