Xiaomi announced the long-awaited redesign of the Camera app, which will gradually roll out to over 40 smartphones. The update comes in response to long-standing user criticism regarding inconsistent function layout, confusing operational logic, and a cluttered interface. The new version of the app, built on the HyperOS 2 system, promises a clearer organization of controls, minimization of distracting elements in the preview area, and more intuitive operation.

Strategic Rollout Plan

Xiaomi has decided to deploy the new app in three gradual waves to ensure a smooth transition across different hardware platforms. The first phase was launched on May 28 and includes flagship models such as the Xiaomi 15 and 14 series, MIX Fold 4, MIX Flip, and Redmi K80 series. The second wave started on June 20 and covered the Xiaomi 13 series, MIX Fold 3, Civi 4 Pro, and selected Redmi Note 14 models. The final phase will take place this month and will bring the update to older devices like the Xiaomi 12S series and the Redmi Note 13 series.

Three Concepts, One Clear Choice

During the development of the new user interface, the Xiaomi development team considered three different design concepts. The first variant, which was ultimately chosen, is characterized by high control efficiency and users reportedly adapt to it best. It relies on a clear layout combining text and icons for maximum clarity. The second proposal presented a minimalist look using only icons with the possibility of freely rearranging them, but suffered from a higher learning curve. The third concept offered a radical approach with a completely unobstructed preview area, but at the cost of more complex control and the risk of unintended actions. Given that the update will be available for dozens of models with millions of users, Xiaomi chose the first variant as the most accessible for the general public.

Key Improvements and New Features

The new app brings a range of practical improvements for both regular and advanced users. Among the most significant new features are quick focal length switching (28mm/35mm) with the option to set a default value, consistent portrait mode control, and the ability to customize the professional mode for perfect photography. There is also more precise exposure control via EV correction and 40 color themes for personalizing the user interface.

The visual aspect of the app has undergone a complete transformation – Xiaomi has redrawn over 140 icons and 600 interface elements. The app now offers a new launch animation, redesigned shutter sounds, and improved watermark options. The professional mode has been revamped to remain accessible for regular users while providing advanced controls for experienced photographers. Video features now support multi-camera integration and monitoring, which content creators will particularly appreciate.

Huge Investment in User Experience

The Camera app redesign represents one of Xiaomi’s most ambitious updates in recent years. Bao Xiao Li, Xiaomi’s product manager for photography, confirmed that the revamp is based on extensive user feedback. The new interface addresses issues with inconsistent layout, confusing function placement, and poor transitions between modes. It brings a cleaner interface, better visual consistency across modes, and fewer elements overlapping the preview of the photographed scene.
