A smoke detector is one of those devices people don’t think about until it starts beeping at the most inconvenient time. Just frying a schnitzel or taking a hot shower can trigger a loud alarm throughout a peaceful home. Many people then do the worst possible thing: they remove the battery, disabling the device even in the event of a real fire. It’s precisely these false alarms that Xiaomi is addressing with its second-generation detector. The Xiaomi Smoke Detector 2 went on sale in China on June 3rd for 149 yuan (approximately 450 CZK converted) and currently remains exclusively in the domestic market.

Two Light Sources Against False Alarms

The main innovation is a sensor with two light sources. While conventional detectors use one, the Smoke Detector 2 utilizes both red and blue light simultaneously. According to Xiaomi, this allows it to distinguish between smoldering and open fires and better separate real smoke from interfering factors such as steam, cooking fumes, or dust.

In addition, temperature and humidity measurement has been added. The device thus doesn’t rely solely on smoke concentration but compares multiple data points simultaneously, which should further reduce the number of false alarms in the kitchen, bathroom, or hallway.

Three Sensitivity Levels and Dust Warning

You can set the detection sensitivity in three levels according to the room. Lower sensitivity is suitable for the kitchen due to cooking, while higher sensitivity is better for the bedroom or hallway. Xiaomi has also added a dust warning: when the sensor becomes dusty, a yellow light illuminates to ensure measurement accuracy is maintained.

The device status is indicated by a circular light bar. Blue signifies normal operation, yellow indicates a malfunction or the need to clean the device, and red signals a triggered fire alarm. A large button on the body facilitates both testing and silencing the alarm.

Five-Year Battery Life and Phone Connectivity

The detector is powered by a CR17450 battery, combined with an energy-saving mode, and according to the manufacturer, it lasts up to 5 years. Before it runs out, an intermittent beep will sound, accompanied by a yellow flash and a notification in the Mi Home app, so you won’t miss the replacement.

Xiaomi HyperOS Connect handles the connectivity. Your phone connects directly to the detector via Bluetooth and displays its status. If you have a Bluetooth Mesh gateway at home, such as a Xiaomi Smart Speaker Pro, you also get remote notifications to the app and integration with the rest of your smart home, where other devices will also trigger voice announcements during an alarm.

The alarm operates in three modes: a loud sound and light directly on-site, a push notification in the app, and an alert via connected devices. It can be silenced both locally and remotely, so you don’t have to climb to the detector on the ceiling; you can use a long pole, Bluetooth, or an infrared remote control. It attaches to the ceiling with screws or adhesive tape, and the cover is designed to resist UV radiation and insects.

The Smoke Detector 2 makes sense primarily for those who already use the Xiaomi ecosystem and the Mi Home app. The catch is clear: it is currently sold only in China, and Xiaomi has not confirmed its release in Europe or the Czech Republic. Also, note that the device monitors smoke, not carbon monoxide or gas leaks.

Would you get a smart smoke detector if it came to our country?
