AMD introduced a brutal processor with dual 3D V-Cache. But this time, it's not aimed at gamers.

  • AMD introduced the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition as the first processor with 3D V-Cache on both CCDs
  • The new product features a total L3 cache capacity of 192 MB and a TDP of 200 W
  • The processor is aimed at developers and creatives and will go on sale on April 22nd

Since its introduction in 2022, 3D V-Cache technology has become synonymous with top-tier gaming performance for AMD processors. However, one limitation has always applied – the additional stacked cache was installed on only one of the two chiplets (CCDs), while the other remained “bare” to achieve higher frequencies. AMD is now breaking this rule and introducing the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition, which is the very first consumer processor to feature 3D V-Cache on both CCDs simultaneously.

A record 208 MB of cache on a single chip

The figures for the new processor are almost unbelievable. The Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition offers 16 cores and 32 threads built on the Zen 5 architecture, with each of the two CCDs containing 64 MB of 3D V-Cache and 32 MB of standard L3 cache. The total L3 cache capacity thus reaches 192 MB, and if we add 16 MB of L2 cache, we get a total of 208 MB of cache – the most AMD has ever integrated into a consumer processor.

Frequencies range from 4.3 GHz base to up to 5.6 GHz boost. Compared to the standard Ryzen 9 9950X3D, the boost frequency drops by 100 MHz, which is the price for the presence of the second 3D V-Cache module. This is also associated with an increase in TDP to 200 W, which is 30 W more than the single-layer variant. AMD recommends using liquid cooling for optimal performance.

Why two 3D V-Caches don’t mean double the gaming performance

At first glance, it might seem that doubling the cache would lead to a significant increase in gaming performance. However, AMD directly admits that this is not the case. Games still do not effectively utilize a large number of cores, and if data has to travel between two CCDs, latency arises, which eliminates most of the theoretical benefit. Gaming performance thus remains practically at the level of a regular 9950X3D.

However, where dual 3D V-Cache pays off is in professional and creative tasks. AMD reports a 5–13% performance increase over the standard 9950X3D in benchmarks like SPEC Workstation 4.0 Data Science. The enormous cache can hold more data directly at the processor cores, which dramatically reduces latency when working with large datasets.

Who is the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 for?

AMD explicitly targets the processor at developers and content creators. Ideal use cases include game engine compilation, large software builds, AI model training, 3D rendering, and working with complex creative pipelines. In other words – tasks that benefit from extremely fast access to large amounts of data.

Jack Huynh, AMD’s Senior Vice President and General Manager of Computing and Graphics, summarizes it by saying: “You will no longer have to choose between a gaming and a creative processor. With the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2, you get both.” This makes particular sense for independent game developers who develop and play on the same machine.

Price and Availability

AMD plans to launch the Ryzen 9 9950X3D2 Dual Edition on April 22, 2026. The official price has not yet been announced, but considering the $699 for the standard 9950X3D, a price of around $799 is speculated (approximately 17 thousand Czech crowns, but the real Czech price will likely be higher). The processor will be compatible with all AM5 socket motherboards, i.e., with both 600 and 800 series chipsets.

It is worth noting that AMD is also paving the way for potential competition from Intel with this move. There are speculations about Nova Lake-S processors with dual bLLC modules, which could offer a similar approach to increasing on-chip memory.

Would you appreciate such a large amount of cache in your next PC?
