Google has started rolling out spatial navigation to Android Auto – a redesigned Map view that shows a scene with 3D buildings, terrain, and individual trees instead of flat lines. According to initial reports, it launched in mid-July, but so far only in the United States.

What spatial navigation looks like in Android Auto

Spatial (or immersive) navigation transforms a classic map into a more detailed 3D scene. According to Google, drivers will find it easier to orient themselves thanks to prominent overpasses and highway exits and more faithfully rendered buildings and landscapes – Maps can even display individual trees along the route. The goal is clear: to make a complex intersection or the correct exit more legible at first glance than on a flat map.

Google announced spatial navigation back in March and is gradually rolling it out across platforms. The first reports of its launch in Android Auto came from a Reddit user after upgrading to Android Auto 17.3. Apparently, it’s a server-side update – meaning it’s not enabled by a specific app version, but by gradual switching on Google’s end. This also explains why not everyone sees the feature yet.

Android Auto won’t release the new feature in the Czech Republic yet

The catch is availability. Spatial navigation is currently rolling out only in the United States, and Google has not commented on expansion to other countries. Anyone outside the USA – including the Czech Republic – will have to wait for the impressive 3D display until Google releases it globally. There is no specific date yet.

At least a small consolation: in the United States, spatial navigation is already running not only in Android Auto, but also on iPhones, in CarPlay, in mobile Maps, and in cars with built-in Android. Even there, however, the rollout is progressing slowly, so the new feature is appearing gradually. When it arrives here, it will be more of a visual improvement than a change in how the navigation itself works.

Are you looking forward to spatial navigation in Android Auto, or are classic Maps enough for you?
