First Xiaomi devices may get Android 17 soon. But there's a catch

Xiaomi is preparing a stable update to Android 17 for its flagship phones this year, but according to the first leaked builds, it won’t be the expected jump to HyperOS 4 yet. Instead, internal test versions bear the designation HyperOS 3.3.

The internal firmwares were highlighted by Ximitime, which encountered engineering builds for Xiaomi 17 and Xiaomi 17 Ultra. According to them, both devices are running on versions from the OS3.0.330 series built on Android 17, in which HyperOS 4 is not mentioned anywhere. These are early internal builds, not a public beta, so take them with a grain of salt.

Why won’t it be HyperOS 4 yet?

Skipping directly to HyperOS 3.3 is not a complete surprise. Already when the Android 17 developer preview was launched, we wrote that Xiaomi skipped version 3.2 and jumped directly from the HyperOS 3.1 series to 3.3 – and that a major visual redesign is apparently being saved for later. The leaked builds rather confirm this assumption.

According to the leak, the first public beta versions of HyperOS 3.3 could appear around mid-July, roughly around the fifteenth. However, no one has officially confirmed the date yet, and much depends on how quickly testing progresses. A stable release is expected in July or August, traditionally first in China and only then globally.

HyperOS 4: New design and additional features

It is HyperOS 4 that most users are probably waiting for. According to current information, it should bring a more significant visual redesign, deeper cooperation with Leica’s color tuning, and its own answer to the Privacy Display feature that Samsung implemented in the Galaxy S26 Ultra. However, specific dates are more complicated. Xiaomi President Lu Weibing previously mentioned that the company would introduce the new system in July or August, but there is often a long time between the unveiling and the actual rollout to phones. Moreover, the unofficial list counts with approximately eighty supported models across Xiaomi, Redmi, and POCO brands, but older devices might have to wait for the update until October. After all, Xiaomi has not yet officially confirmed the name “HyperOS 4”.
