A number of free games are released on Steam every day, but most of them quickly disappear without much attention. The unassuming strategy game Little Incrementisle turned out completely differently. Within the first 24 hours, it surpassed 25 thousand downloads, reached over two thousand concurrent players, and is receiving predominantly very positive reviews from users.

Small Islands, Resources, and Endless Upgrades

Little Incrementisle combines a simple building strategy with the so-called incremental genre. On each island, you start practically from scratch: you collect wood and food, build structures, recruit inhabitants, and assign them work. Once you sufficiently develop a colony, you sail to another island, and the entire cycle restarts with different conditions.

Individual islands have their own advantages and disadvantages, which alter production speed, prices, or waiting times. Furthermore, events such as earthquakes, floods, or pirate raids interfere with the peaceful building. Between expeditions, you earn points for a permanent skill tree, so part of your progress remains preserved even after moving to another island.

Players were particularly thrilled by the fair price: zero crowns

The rapid success isn’t solely due to the addictive gameplay loop. Little Incrementisle is completely free, and at the time of writing, players find no ads or microtransactions in it. Thus, the title doesn’t feel like a demo created primarily to push users into purchases, but rather like a normal smaller game that can simply be downloaded and played.

On Steam, at the time of writing, the game has 89% positive reviews from over five hundred reviews. SteamDB recorded a historical maximum of 2293 concurrent players on its release day. For a small independent strategy game without an established brand, this is a very decent start.

Runs on almost anything, but isn’t for everyone

Minimalist graphics use simple icons instead of detailed models, which helps the game with clarity and low requirements. It only needs a dual-core processor around 2 GHz, 2 GB of RAM, and approximately 500 MB of storage. Officially, it is available for Windows, and the interface is currently offered only in English and French.

However, simplicity can also be its greatest weakness. Some players may eventually grow tired of the repetitive cycle, the extensive micromanagement, or the included mini-games. But if you enjoy progressively unlocking upgrades, optimizing production, and “just one more island” type games, Little Incrementisle can be a surprisingly dangerous time sink.

Do you prefer a smaller game completely free, or do you not mind microtransactions if they provide new content long-term?
