There are still a good few months left until the unveiling of the new Samsung Galaxy S27 series, but speculations surrounding it are already gaining momentum. The latest information claims that the Koreans will finally, after a long time, touch upon the visuals of the rear camera module. The reason, surprisingly, is practical – magnets for wireless accessories must fit into the phone’s body.

Five years of the same layout might be ending

The current design of three lenses stacked one below the other was first introduced by Samsung in 2021 with the Galaxy S21, and it has more or less stuck to it since then. Minor cosmetic adjustments came annually – one year the island disappeared, another year it reappeared, as happened with this year’s Galaxy S26 series. However, the trio of vertically aligned lenses has become a kind of visual signature of the brand.

According to leaker Lanzuk from the Naver platform, Samsung plans to finally break this series. The specific form of the new layout is not yet known, but it is reportedly similar to a design that has already appeared on another phone from the brand. Interestingly, the redesign should apply to all models in the series, not just the top-tier Galaxy S27 Ultra.

Magnets that Samsung owes

However, the real driver of change is not design ambition; it is the Qi2 standard and compatibility with magnetic accessories. Samsung thus finally wants to get closer to the ecosystem that Apple launched with MagSafe technology back in 2020. Magnets in the phone’s back will allow users to simply snap on a wireless charger, car mount, or wallet without needing a special case with integrated magnets.

However, a healthy dose of skepticism is needed here. Samsung was supposed to bring this feature to the Galaxy S26 series, where it was expected to be one of the main new features. The reality was different – the magnets ultimately didn’t arrive, and Galaxy S26 users still have to resort to cases with built-in magnets for MagSafe compatibility. If the Koreans fail to deliver on this promise for the Galaxy S27 as well, it will be the second unfulfilled year in a row.

Either way, if all goes well, the Galaxy S27 series will receive its most significant design overhaul in the last five years. And for the first time, it will be driven not by the need to impress fans, but by a quiet battle over who will have better integration with the accessory ecosystem. It will be quite entertaining to watch.
