Gemini for macOS now supports the Spark feature, which allows the agent to stop being confined to the cloud and start working with what you have stored on your disk. But before we dive into the new features, it’s worth explaining what Spark is all about. What exactly is Gemini Spark What the Mac app brings What about Windows? What exactly is Gemini Spark Gemini Spark is a personal AI agent that works in the background 24 hours a day — even when your phone and laptop are turned off, as it handles tasks in the cloud. You assign it a task, and it completes it itself, though always under your supervision: it asks for permission before major interventions. It can be connected to services like Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Docs, and Sheets, as well as third-party applications. Simply put, it’s a response to agent tools from competitors, such as solutions from Anthropic or OpenAI. While regular Gemini is a chatbot that responds to queries, Spark is designed to actually perform tasks. Until now, it worked on iOS, Android, and the web — now it’s properly settling on the desktop for the first time. What the Mac app brings A crucial new feature is access to local files. In the settings, you designate so-called connected folders that Spark is allowed to access, and it then works with their content. Google provides specific examples: the agent can sort all PDFs in the Downloads folder into a clear structure or create a budget spreadsheet from invoices stored on the computer and update it regularly. You can revoke folder access at any time. In the settings, you’ll also find two practical options — the ability to keep your Mac awake to complete tasks, and a notification if the agent fails to back up a file (which is enabled by default). In the future, Google promises an even more interesting trick: you’ll be able to remotely launch a task on your Mac from your phone (Claude already does this via the Dispatch feature). For example, you could ask Spark to find a sales report on your home computer, extract a number from it, and email it to you while you’re away. What about Windows? Now to the question that every Windows user will ask. Google released a native Gemini app for Windows back in April 2026, which can search local files and applications. However, this specific Spark local file automation is launching first on macOS — it’s the first of two major desktop updates this summer (the second is expected to be a new voice mode). Google has not yet specified when or if the same feature will arrive on Windows. There’s also a catch with the price. Spark is reserved for Google AI Ultra subscribers, the most expensive plan, which costs from 2,999.99 CZK per month in the Czech Republic. That’s an amount that even many professionals would think twice about. Add the fact that the feature currently only runs in English, and it’s clear that Czech users will have to wait for full utilization. Allowing an AI agent into your own folders requires a fair amount of trust, and even though Google emphasizes that Spark only sees explicitly connected directories, it’s a step everyone must consider for themselves. For automation and productivity enthusiasts, it’s an enticing tool; for more cautious users, it’s more a cause for reflection. Would you entrust an AI agent with access to your files, or is that too big a step for you?
