Gemini will now look into Google Wallet. Disconnecting will not delete saved data

Google is linking Gemini with Google Wallet: the assistant can use it to find a boarding pass, retrieve data from loyalty cards, or work with transactions from linked financial accounts. The new feature is currently only heading to the USA, but its privacy rules also deserve attention. Disconnecting alone will not remove transaction information that Gemini has already saved.

What can Gemini find in Wallet and what can’t it access?

The connection works via Connected Apps. As 9to5Google describes, Gemini can draw data from loyalty cards, event tickets, and boarding passes. Examples include finding a boarding pass for a specific flight or displaying airline loyalty account numbers.

Another option is an overview of available rewards and special offers based on cards and passes stored in Wallet. It’s with such queries that the connection makes the most sense to me: the input has a clear goal, and the result should be specific information you need.

However, access to information is not authorization to handle money. Gemini cannot make payments using payment methods in Wallet. Nor can it edit or delete financial accounts connected via Plaid. Therefore, it’s necessary to distinguish between querying expenses and instructing to pay for something — this integration does not offer the latter option.

Expense overview has a condition: a linked financial account

The financial part works with transaction data from accounts linked via services like Plaid. This condition is crucial: the promise of expense analysis applies precisely to such connected accounts. From their data, Gemini can compile a summary of spending and offer budgeting tips.

One of the examples given is the question of how much you spent on groceries last month. Personally, before linking, I would consider whether I want to use the assistant for this type of query as well. Finding a ticket and having your own expenses analyzed are two different needs from a privacy perspective.

You can’t enable the new feature in the Czech Republic yet

The integration is currently available only in the USA to users aged 18 and over. Furthermore, Google is rolling it out gradually, so not every account that meets the conditions may see it. The date of a potential launch in the Czech Republic is not yet known.
