Google Assistant on Android is ending. Gemini is already removing the option to switch back

Google is replacing Assistant with Gemini on Android and removing the option to revert from its app. The user migration has been ongoing for several weeks, but now it’s no longer just about which assistant you prefer. The “Switch to Google Assistant” option, meaning switching back to the original Assistant, is disappearing from the menu.

The 9to5Google server reports that Assistant was no longer available on any of the devices and accounts its editorial staff checked in the USA and Europe. We also don’t see the option to switch back on our editorial Pixel 11 Pro XL. Current user reports also suggest that the migration is in full swing. However, this is not confirmation of a completed transition on all phones.

Button now invokes Gemini, you won’t find the switch back

For everyday use, it’s important where the change will be reflected: a long press of the power button or swiping from the corners of the screen now invokes Gemini. The transition, therefore, doesn’t just affect the standalone app. Gemini is taking over the role of the voice assistant accessible in these ways directly on Android.

The shortcut to return to Assistant is missing from the bottom of the account menu when using the Google app in version 17.60 in stable release and 17.62 in beta. So, this is not a change described only for a test version. Anyone who wanted to use Gemini only on the condition that they could return to Assistant at any time can no longer count on this option.

Google originally planned to discontinue the mobile Assistant as early as 2025, then postponed the deadline to 2026. The final schedule was announced at the beginning of August, and the discontinuation itself began at the beginning of September. The current disappearance of the switch thus follows the gradual user migration of recent weeks.

The change also affects paired devices, but not home speakers yet

The restriction on reverting doesn’t only apply to the phone. According to the change description, the original Assistant can no longer be used or switched to on tablets and paired devices. This group also includes Wear OS, headphones, and Android Auto. I wouldn’t overlook this part when assessing the transition: it doesn’t end at the mobile screen.

Google Nest and Google Home smart speakers and displays are an exception for now. On these, Assistant remains unchanged for the time being, as do other speakers and displays with its support. Therefore, the news of the mobile Assistant’s end cannot be read as an immediate shutdown of the service throughout the entire household.
