Google Contacts will create your own business card. Here's how to set it up, we tried it

Sharing your own number usually involves dictating it digit by digit, or searching your phone for where your contact card is hidden. Google is now simplifying this – right at the top of the Contacts app, your digital business card has been added, which you can send to anyone as a single file.

Google Contacts will partially do the work for you

The magic is that the phone fills in a large part of it for you. The business card pulls your name and profile photo from your Google account, and also takes your email address from there. It adds your phone number from the SIM card you have in your mobile. Thus, the basis of the business card is created without you typing a single letter.

You can add more details yourself

The rest is up to you. Using the pencil icon in the top right corner of the card, you can add your postal address, company name, department, job title, and website. This turns a bare number into a full-fledged business card, like one you would otherwise put in an email footer.

Don’t want to share the number from your SIM or an email linked to your account? You can manually add a different number and a different address and then share only what you want. Moreover, Google automatically offers only your phone number for sharing – other fields remain hidden until you release them yourself.

Sharing itself is then a matter of one button next to the card. This turns the business card into a .vcf file, which you can send however you like – via email, messages, or any other application. The person you send the business card to will save you directly with all your details.

What is this all leading to? For Tap to Share

The business card is not the goal, but a stepping stone. Google is preparing the Tap to Share feature, with which two people can exchange contacts by simply bringing their phones together – very similar to how NameDrop works on iPhones. We discussed exactly how it’s supposed to work before: NFC serves only as a trigger, and the data itself then transfers via faster Wi-Fi Direct.

However, for there to be something to send by tapping, a card with your information must first exist. And Google is now fully rolling that out. Tap to Share itself cannot be launched yet and it will take some time – but you can prepare your business card now, so you’re ready when the feature arrives.

Furthermore, the “Your info” card is rolling out gradually, so if you don’t see it yet, you’ll probably just need to wait a bit, and it will appear within a few days.
