Google Drive adds a brilliant feature for those with messy files. AI will help with their organization

  • Google Drive, with Gemini's help, will suggest where to move unorganized files in your storage.
  • You activate the feature with the Suggest File Moves button, but you always manually approve the actual move.
  • The new feature currently works only in the web version of Drive and only in English.

For many people, Google Drive eventually turns into a digital dump (I know what I’m talking about). You put a file there with the intention of organizing it into the proper folder “later,” but that moment never comes, and after a few months, a pile of unclassified documents stares back at you from the main screen. Google is now taking over this annoying task for you. The assistant Gemini will go through your storage and suggest where individual files belong. The feature, called Organize My Files, has just left beta and is becoming available to regular users.

How Gemini handles the cleanup

In Drive, the feature will appear as a Suggest File Moves button, in the My Drive section and in parent folders. After clicking, Gemini will go through file names and content, your existing folder structure, and general organization principles to create a cleanup proposal.

It will divide the suggestions into two groups. The first moves loose files into folders you’ve already created. The second groups related documents and suggests a completely new folder for them, including a name.

Nothing will happen without your permission. You’ll review each suggestion in an overview, where you can view files via preview cards, uncheck individual items, or rename suggested folders on the spot. Only when you confirm your selection will Gemini move the files in bulk and notify you of any potential permission changes.

It can sort PDFs, Google documents, spreadsheets, and presentations, Microsoft Office files, images, and videos with transcripts, and it can also handle shortcuts. However, you must have editor permissions for all files.

Available now and worldwide, but only in English

According to Google, the feature is available now, but it will roll out to users gradually over several weeks through channels. The prerequisite is enabled Gemini for Workspace in Drive and active Workspace smart features. From paid plans, it will be available to business plans Business Standard and Plus and Enterprise Standard and Plus, from consumer plans Google AI Pro and Ultra, and in education, Google AI Pro for Education.

Availability might be an issue. Although the new feature will run worldwide, for now, you’ll find it only in the web version of Drive and it’s intended to work only in English.

Would you let Gemini organize your Drive?
