  • A mention of a Google Home Display device has appeared in the Google Home app code for iOS
  • Google is reportedly definitively saying goodbye to the Nest brand and transitioning to the Google Home naming convention

Five years. That’s how long smart home users have been waiting for a new smart display from Google. The last 2nd generation Nest Hub arrived in 2021, and the even larger Nest Hub Max hasn’t been mentioned since 2019. Meanwhile, the silence around the entire line became so profound that many users thought Google had simply given up on it in favor of the Pixel Tablet. However, it now appears that a successor is likely on the way.

What we know about the device

A mention of a product named Google Home Display was discovered by MacRumors analyst Aaron Perris within the code of the Google Home app for iOS. The new addition is now present in the list of devices, which includes Chromecasts, Nest Cameras, and smart speakers and displays. No further details about specifications, appearance, or price have leaked yet.

The name itself is quite telling, however. Google is abandoning the Nest brand and transitioning to a more unified naming convention under the Google Home umbrella. It made the same decision for the upcoming smart speaker, which will be called the Google Home Speaker and is expected to arrive in spring 2026, essentially any time now.

A return Google itself hinted at

The leak doesn’t come entirely out of the blue. Google Home division head Anish Kattukaran stated last October that he views smart displays as the ideal format for controlling a smart home. The timing of the leak also fits perfectly – not long before the start of the Google I/O 2026 conference, where the new device could theoretically be unveiled.

Naturally, a mention in the app’s code is not yet a guarantee that the product will actually be released, or that it will happen in the near future. However, given the five-year wait, the impending launch of the Google Home Speaker, and the ongoing transition to Gemini, it seems Google is serious this time.

Would you get a new smart display from Google?
