Google revealed how you can design your own widget. You don't have to be a designer or programmer; words will be enough

Home screen widgets are handy, but they rarely show exactly what you need. Weather without unnecessary clutter, a countdown to your partner’s birthday, or the euro exchange rate right next to stocks – today, this usually means searching the Play Store and trying one app after another. Google is preparing the Create My Widget app for this, which has just received its own store page. You simply describe the widget, and Gemini will build it for you.

How do you create a widget?

Google first showcased the feature back in May at The Android Show event, and now the interface itself is visible. The 9to5Google server was the first to notice the store page. On your phone, the app will guide you through the creation process step-by-step: you select a category, browse through suggested widgets within it, and at the bottom, there’s a “describe your widget” field for your own input. You can still fine-tune the result before you add it to your home screen.

• Combinations – combines multiple topics into one widget
• Weather alerts – UV index, tides, or wind forecast
• World clock – time zones and countdown to time change
• Daily overview – horoscopes, recipes, interesting facts, or affirmations
• Important dates – countdown to birthdays, holidays, and anniversaries
• Markets – stocks, cryptocurrencies, and exchange rates

Visually, the creations are based on shapes from the Material 3 Expressive design language. A simpler widget with a few data points doesn’t have to be just a boring rectangle.

Starting with Googlebooks

The version currently in the store is intended for Googlebooks, which Google officially introduced this week. According to 9to5Google, the app is set to debut on them in early October. The offering here is also broader: in addition to weather and important dates, sports and fitness, events and travel, daily habits, finance, or tips and tools will be added. Each category hides several templates, primarily intended to suggest what can be created.

Who will try out custom widgets?

On mobile devices, Create My Widget falls under Gemini Intelligence, which has significant hardware requirements. When Google introduced it in May, even last year’s flagships, including the Pixel 9 and Galaxy Z Fold7, were excluded from support. Therefore, it can primarily be expected on the latest high-end phones. Whether the application will understand Czech and when we will see it in the Czech Republic is not yet clear.

It is also evident from the screenshots that the application relies heavily on pre-prepared categories and templates. How flexible input will be outside of these, from which services the widgets will draw data, and how often they will refresh will only become clear during live operation.
