Spotify has come up with a way to get another hundred from you monthly. Will you be persuaded?

  • Spotify is preparing AI remixes, with which you can rework your favorite songs
  • In addition to Premium, they could cost 4 to 5 dollars per month (approximately 90 to 110 CZK when converted)
  • Sony and Warner have not signed yet, and artists can refuse participation

Spotify subscribers might get another reason to dig deeper into their wallets. As reported by the Financial Times, the Swedish company is planning an artificial intelligence add-on for the first quarter of 2027, which will allow you to customize songs to your liking. Spotify is reportedly considering an additional 4 to 5 dollars per month (about 90 to 110 CZK) for it, on top of the regular subscription.

From a folk song to a dance hit, from one singer to another’s cover

The news report was picked up by Reuters and Android Authority. According to them, the service would allow subscribers to, for example, transform a folk song into a dance track or have one artist “sing” another’s song. The launch is reportedly planned around the Grammy Awards in February.

Spotify is also working to ensure that original creators benefit from the remixes. Fan versions could appear in playlists, their plays would be counted towards the original tracks in Spotify charts, and royalties would go to the original artists.

Spotify currently only has licenses from some labels

According to FT, agreements have already been signed with Universal Music Group, the independent group Merlin, and the French company Believe. An agreement with Universal on AI covers was reached in May. However, Sony Music and Warner Music have not yet signed. These are two of the three largest global record labels, so without them, a large portion of well-known hits would be missing from the service.

Another hurdle is the artists themselves. They will be able to refuse participation, even if a label has signed a license on their behalf. Spotify and Universal are reportedly negotiating with individual artists, and convincing current stars is proving more difficult than older, established names.

It will be an add-on, not a Premium price increase

The important thing is that Premium itself would not increase in price because of this. Remixes are intended to be an optional add-on, so those who don’t want them don’t have to pay. In the Czech Republic, the Individual plan currently costs 185 CZK per month. However, reports only mention American prices and subscribers, so whether the service will arrive here and for how much is not yet clear. A more expensive plan with new features has, after all, been discussed by Spotify since 2025.

Ian Moore from Bernstein estimates that by the end of 2028, 7 to 8% of American subscribers could purchase the add-on. Spotify co-president Gustav Söderström claims that the service will open up a new revenue stream for artists. Spotify did not immediately respond to a query from Reuters.

Would you pay extra for the ability to remix your favorite songs?
