Google Sheets can handle formula errors. Gemini will explain and fix them with one click

  • Google Sheets, with the help of Gemini, will now explain formula errors and immediately offer a corrected version.
  • For an incorrect formula, a "Fix" button will appear, which opens the Gemini sidebar assistant.
  • The feature is gradually being rolled out to paid Workspace editions and Google AI Pro or Ultra subscribers.

Anyone who has ever put together a more complex spreadsheet surely knows mysterious messages like #REF! or #VALUE! – and often guesses in vain what exactly is wrong. Google now wants to help with exactly that: it is adding another Gemini-powered feature to Google Sheets that will explain the formula error in plain language and offer a fix with a single click.

How does formula correction work in Google Sheets?

The principle is simple. When you make a mistake in a formula, Google Sheets will now display a fix button next to it. After clicking, the Gemini panel will open on the right side, which will clearly explain where the problem is and immediately show the correct form of the formula. You then just need to accept it.

Until now, Sheets could only mark an error with a generic code like #ERROR! and a terse message, from which a regular user usually didn’t understand where the error occurred. According to Google, the assistant can handle everything from basic calculations to very complex ones – so it shouldn’t hesitate even with larger spreadsheets.

Who will get the new feature?

The feature is being rolled out gradually starting Monday, but full deployment to all accounts may take up to two weeks. It will appear automatically wherever Gemini for Workspace is enabled in Sheets and where the user has smart Workspace features enabled.

The catch is that this is not a feature for everyone. It will be available to business editions Business and Enterprise (Standard and Plus), education editions with AI add-ons, and consumer plans Google AI Pro and Ultra. Cheaper and free accounts are currently missing from the list, so a regular user will only get smart formula correction with a paid subscription. Additionally, Google is offering higher usage limits until July 15, 2026, so you have time to try out the new feature.

Would you welcome an assistant in Google Sheets that fixes formula errors for you?
