Nothing introduced new over-ear headphones Headphone (1) Pro, which fit three drivers into each earcup. In addition to more sophisticated sound settings, the company also promises more effective active noise cancellation than with Headphone (1). The announced sales launch is today.

Three drivers and a switch for returning to neutral sound

The basis of the sound system is a 40mm dynamic driver for bass, complemented by a separate „precision“ driver and an xMEMS driver for treble. According to Nothing, the bass driver covers the range of 20 Hz to 10 kHz, for „precision“ it is stated 5 to 15 kHz, and for xMEMS 10 to 40 kHz. Their bands therefore overlap; these are not three sharply separated parts of the sound.

For those who like to customize their sound, I would consider the capabilities of the Nothing X application more interesting than the sheer number of drivers. It allows independent adjustment of the main drivers and the aforementioned „precision“ driver. The headphones also have a physical Flat EQ profile switch, which allows for a quick return to a neutral setting.

Nothing collaborated with London’s Metropolis Studios on the audio features. The Dynamic Spatial Audio mode offers five sound profiles with head tracking. I would consider the customization options as the main reason to be interested in the Pro version; I wouldn’t consider the trio of drivers alone a reason to replace existing headphones.

ANC is expected to be 5 dB stronger on average compared to its predecessor

Noise cancellation uses ten microphones, and Nothing states a maximum attenuation of up to 46 dB. For comparison with the original Headphone (1), however, two other declared values are more telling: the average cancellation is expected to be 5 dB stronger and its frequency coverage 40% wider. The company thus promises improvement across a wider range of frequencies as well.

The design has also changed. The headband is 10% wider compared to Headphone (1), the frame is aluminum, and the hinges are titanium. The earcups are protected by scratch-resistant glass, and plastic is also part of the construction. The headphones weigh 327 grams and have an IP52 rating. Due to the weight, I would prefer to try them on before purchasing, especially for long listening sessions.

Up to 30 hours with ANC, lossless audio via cable

The battery has a capacity of 1,060 mAh. Nothing promises up to 30 hours of playback with ANC enabled, or up to 68 hours without it. When choosing for listening with noise cancellation, I would therefore be guided by the first value, not the higher number. According to the manufacturer, five minutes of charging should be enough for up to two hours of listening with ANC, or four hours without it.

Wireless connectivity is handled by Bluetooth 6.1 with support for AAC, SBC, LDAC, and LC3 codecs, and Auracast is also included. Via USB-C, the headphones support lossless audio transmission. However, the original Headphone (1) also offers this, so wired listening alone is not a reason to switch to the Pro version.

Price exceeds 10,000 CZK including VAT in conversion

The announced price is 9,199 CZK. Announced retailers for the September 29 launch include nothing.tech, Alza, Datart, Planeo, Smarty, and MP.cz.
