SammyGuru server brought interesting information about the upcoming One UI 8.5 update, which is expected to arrive in early 2026 along with the Galaxy S26 series. According to them, Samsung focused on a minor redesign of the lock screen, preparing two changes within it.

Blurred Background for Better Notification Readability

The main new feature is a blurred background effect under notifications on the lock screen. Samsung is thus responding to a long-standing problem with the readability of notifications, which often got lost in distracting wallpapers. Notification text will now be significantly more contrasting and easier to read regardless of the chosen background.

The current solution in One UI 8 requires either a simple wallpaper or a pre-blurred background for notifications to be clearly visible. The new blur effect elegantly solves this problem directly at the system level. It is not yet clear whether this will be the default setting for all users, or if they will be able to choose from different display styles.

New Clock Styles Bring More Customization Options

Samsung is also adding several new clock styles to One UI 8.5 for the lock screen. Unlike the competing iOS 26, Samsung sticks to its traditional design and does not offer controversial extra-tall clocks. Leaked images show two new styles with a cartoonish touch, utilizing rounded shapes and color gradients.

One of the new styles will also offer vertical orientation, which will expand customization options. Samsung thus continues the tradition of extensive personalization that users appreciate. For fans of deeper customization, improvements to the LockStar app from the Good Lock suite might also be coming.

When Can We Expect One UI 8.5?

The One UI 8.5 update is expected to be introduced alongside the flagship Galaxy S26 series in early 2026. In addition to lock screen changes, Samsung is also preparing new AI features, an improved Gallery app, and more flexible control over the battery indicator. After its debut on the latest smartphones, the update will gradually roll out to older Galaxy models.
