One UI 9 will bring more home screen customizations. Samsung is preparing these new features

  • According to a leak, Samsung is preparing a new wave of home screen customizations for One UI 9 via the Home Up module
  • Apparently, you'll be able to customize the dock independently – change its background, blur, and icon count regardless of the rest of the screen
  • Multi-finger gestures are also expected, to which you can assign actions such as switching apps or taking a screenshot

Samsung never lets its customization arsenal starve, and with the arrival of One UI 9, built on Android 17, it’s preparing to step up its game again. New options have appeared in an early version of the Home Up module from the Good Lock suite, allowing users to tailor their home screen to their liking – from a fully customizable dock to multi-finger gesture control. However, this is currently a leak from a preliminary version, not an official announcement.

What’s changing with the dock?

The early version of the module was highlighted by leaker Galaxy Techie and analyzed by Android Authority. The biggest new feature is the independent customization of the dock, which is the bar with icons at the bottom edge of the screen. According to the leak, you will be able to change its background – choose a color, insert an image, or enable blurring – and fine-tune details like shadow or rounded corners.

However, the second feature is likely more practical: the number of apps in the dock can be set independently of the grid on the rest of the screen. Until now, both were linked, so anyone who wanted a denser grid on the home screen also ended up with an overcrowded dock.

What will multi-finger gestures be used for?

The second major addition is multi-finger gestures. Home Up is now expected to recognize up to five fingers, and you can assign specific actions to individual movements – such as a three-finger swipe down or a pinch. Options include switching between applications, opening the overview of running applications, taking a screenshot, or jumping to the home screen, and according to earlier hints, also volume, brightness, or launching search. In practice, you’ll be able to perform many tasks with a single gesture, without going into settings.

Home Up is by no means a newcomer. The module from Samsung’s approved Good Lock suite can already rearrange the home screen grid, customize app folders, widget sizes, and the appearance of the share menu and task switcher – and we wrote in detail about its capabilities with One UI 8. The new features simply expand that package with a layer that was previously mainly handled by alternative third-party launchers.

When will the new customizations arrive in One UI 9?

The features are apparently exclusively tied to Galaxy phones with One UI 9 and are expected to arrive first with the upcoming foldable series Galaxy Z Fold8 and Flip8, and only then on older models. The One UI 9 beta is already running on the Galaxy S26 series. Meanwhile, Samsung is testing the system on dozens of devices, and Galaxy S25 owners might receive it earlier than usual this year.

However, before the upcoming overlay reaches its final form, details may still change – and some of the new features might even arrive with a later update.

Do you miss the freedom to customize the home screen on Samsung, or are you content with what it offers today?
