Redmi 17 5G is here. Xiaomi introduced a more powerful sibling to the phone that just arrived in the Czech Republic

No sooner had the affordable Redmi 17 4G appeared in Czech stores than Xiaomi revealed its better-equipped sibling. The Redmi 17 5G will feature the same large battery and display, but adds a more powerful processor and, crucially, 5G support – precisely what the cheaper version lacks. However, you will almost certainly pay extra for the faster connectivity and chip.

What the Redmi 17 5G offers

Both phones share the same foundation. Inside, there’s a 7,500 mAh battery, which, according to Xiaomi, will be complemented by 45W charging and the option of 22.5W reverse charging – allowing the phone to serve as a backup power source for headphones or smartwatches. The display has a 6.9-inch diagonal, HD+ resolution (1600 × 720), and a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz; the Corning Gorilla Glass 7i cover glass is said by the manufacturer to better withstand common drops.

Photos are handled by a dual camera with a main 50Mpx sensor and an auxiliary lens, while an 8Mpx selfie camera sits at the front. It also features IP64 dust and splash resistance, a side-mounted fingerprint reader, NFC, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The entire system is powered by HyperOS 3 overlay.

How is it better than the Redmi 17 4G?

The body and most of the features are practically indistinguishable between the two models – the differences lie within. The processor is key: while the 4G version relies on the MediaTek Helio G91-Ultra chip, the 5G model is powered by the newer Snapdragon 4 Gen 5 chip, manufactured with a 4nm process. This handles higher clock speeds and, most importantly, brings 5G network support. The cheaper Redmi 17 remains with 4G/LTE.

For the 5G version, Xiaomi also opted for faster UFS 2.2 storage (the 4G variant has slower eMMC 5.1), which will be noticeable mainly when installing applications and loading data. The software promise also differs: for the 5G model, the manufacturer states up to 48 months of “factory-like performance,” while for the 4G it’s 36 months – however, this is their own laboratory metric for aging resistance, not the duration of security updates. The rest – battery, display, and cameras – are shared by both phones.

Price and availability

Xiaomi has not announced the official price or launch date for the Czech market. The cheaper Redmi 17 4G is sold in the Czech Republic starting from 4,799 CZK for the 128 GB configuration, so the 5G version in its basic configuration will likely cost around 6,000 CZK. However, this is merely speculation on our part and should be taken with a grain of salt.
