Flagship Samsung phones with the Ultra moniker have been using the same 200MP Isocell HP2 sensor for three generations now. Although it still belongs among the top and the manufacturer keeps improving it year-on-year using software, an ultimate smartphone like the Galaxy S26 Ultra will surely be, deserves a more frequent upgrade. However, according to everything, we should indeed see this happen this year.

Still 200MP, but in a larger sensor

According to sources from China, the new Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra should receive a new primary sensor. The 1/1.3″ Isocell HP2 sensor with 200MP resolution could be replaced by a sensor also with 200MP resolution, but with a larger size of 1/1.1″. This nearly inch-sized sensor should come from competitor Sony. However, it would be far from the first time Samsung used sensors from Sony in its flagship, as even last year’s Galaxy S25 Ultra hid sensors from this Japanese company behind the 3x and 5x zoom lenses.

In Sony’s rendition, it should be a premiere – they haven’t produced a sensor with such resolution so far. Besides the mentioned resolution and size, which will allow the sensor to capture more light, we don’t know much about the new Sony sensor. According to the source, we should indeed see this sensor in Samsung’s flagship, but unfortunately, there is reportedly still a possibility that it won’t arrive with the Galaxy S26 Ultra next January, but only in 2027 with the Galaxy S27 Ultra.

Do you think Samsung will use the same main camera for the “Ultra” for the fourth time?
