The Samsung Galaxy S26 has only been on store shelves for two months, and more specific details about the next generation are already starting to leak. Information is now emerging from the Chinese social network Weibo that could particularly please photography enthusiasts – the Galaxy S27 Ultra could revive variable aperture technology after many years, which Samsung last used in its premium models seven years ago. In addition, the main sensor should also bring LOFIC technology, which we reported on earlier.

Variable Aperture Returns After Seven Years?

Details about the alleged primary camera of the Samsung Galaxy S27 Ultra were shared on Weibo by a popular leaker known as Smart Pikachu. According to his information, the manufacturer is currently testing a 200Mpx main sensor with variable aperture, which is designed to physically adapt to current lighting conditions. In practice, this would mean better results both in full daylight and in dusk and night, when it is necessary to let as much light as possible into the sensor.

If the speculation is confirmed, it will be the return of a feature that disappeared from Samsung smartphones many years ago. Variable aperture last appeared on the Galaxy S10 in 2019, which inherited it from the pioneering Galaxy S9 model. Since the arrival of the Galaxy S20 series, Samsung has not gone this route and has opted for a fixed aperture on all subsequent flagships.

Apple is also expected to go in a similar direction. According to earlier leaks, variable aperture could also arrive in the anticipated iPhone 18 Pro series. The question remains who will appeal to customers with it first – the competitive battle in mobile photography is certainly gaining another interesting dimension.

Only Three Cameras and LOFIC Technology

Another significant piece of information is related to the new leak. The alleged 200Mpx sensor should also utilize LOFIC technology (Lateral Overflow Integration Capacitor), which improves the dynamic range of the image directly at the hardware level. We already wrote about this in an earlier article, when leaker Digital Chat Station mentioned the developing ISOCELL HPA sensor with a size of 1/1.12 inches. The technology is already used by the competing Xiaomi 17 Ultra.

In addition, some sources mention that the Galaxy S27 Ultra could abandon the current four-camera setup and switch to a trio. The 3x telephoto lens is expected to be the victim of this cut.

It is, however, important to remember that several months still remain until the official unveiling of the Galaxy S27 Ultra. At this stage of development, Samsung still has plenty of room to change its plans, so all current information should be treated with caution. After all, a significant portion of last year’s speculations about the current S26 series ultimately did not materialize (for example, the introduction of a Pro model or the replacement of the Plus variant with a thin Galaxy S26 Edge).

Would Samsung bring back variable aperture, or will it stick to software adjustments again?
