Smart home without sending data out. SwitchBot AI Hub got cheaper, but it has its caveats

A smart hub that analyzes camera footage directly in your home and sends nothing to the cloud – that sounds like a wish come true for anyone who dislikes their living room footage sitting on foreign servers. The SwitchBot AI Hub now costs 5,346 CZK with code ALZADNY15 instead of 6,290 CZK. However, international reviewers disagree on its evaluation – and it’s fair to explain why.

A small Linux computer disguised as a hub

Inside is a local AI chip with 6 TOPS of performance, which runs a visual-language model directly on the device – an AI that understands what is in the camera’s image. Practically, this means the hub can recognize what’s happening at home and trigger automation accordingly, without sending video anywhere externally. It also includes 8 GB of memory, 32 GB of internal storage, and a 16GB microSD card in the package.

Reviewers agree that it is essentially a small Linux computer running three containers: Home Assistant (the most popular open-source smart home platform), Frigate (a system for camera recording and analysis), and an agent for AI control. It can handle up to eight 2K cameras – not just SwitchBot branded ones, but also third-party cameras via the RTSP protocol – and functions as a Matter bridge for up to 30 devices.

A practical advantage is the USB-C port, to which you can connect an external SSD – the 16GB card fills up very quickly when recording from multiple cameras. The MightyGadget reviewer, who initially expected another marketing “AI” device, wrote after testing that it is a truly unusual hub that bridges the world of closed devices and the world of self-hosted solutions.

Critical voices need to be taken seriously

On the other hand, the Matter Alpha editorial team published a review titled “a hub with an identity crisis” and was quite strict: according to them, the device promises too many things at once and is far from ready as an AI hub for the smart home. They criticize it for lacking Zigbee or Thread, meaning you primarily work with Wi-Fi devices in Home Assistant, and that for a full-fledged Home Assistant, it’s better to buy dedicated hardware.

The second recurring criticism concerns the subscription. Although local processing is the main draw, some advanced AI features still require a monthly plan (abroad, around two euros per month for a limit on model queries). The New Atlas reviewer described it mixedly: “having an AI agent running directly on the hub is undeniably great, but at the same time, it can be quite frustrating” – precisely because of limited configuration options.

The Irish Examiner review summarized it best after several months of use: it’s not a device you plug in and forget – it’s something you live with and constantly fine-tune. For enthusiasts who enjoy configuring complex systems, it’s a huge toy; for someone who wants a quiet home running in the background, it’s a bad choice.
