The Czech meteorological application In-počasí has undergone a fundamental transformation. After years of gradual updates, the developers from InMeteo decided on a complete rewrite – a new core, modern design, and an expanded network of stations. The result is an application that maintains its domestic origin while not being afraid to compete with giants. And most importantly: it is free and ad-free.

Over 500 meteorological stations across the Czech Republic

A key new feature is the expansion of the network of measuring stations. While the application previously relied on approximately 250 professional stations from ČHMÚ, there are now over 500. In practice, this means more accurate data, especially in mountainous areas and on the outskirts of cities, where coverage was previously lacking.

Right in the introductory part of the application, you see current measurements from the nearest station – temperature, pressure, humidity, wind, or precipitation. Swiping your finger to the side displays other parameters such as wind gusts or dew point. The option to compare with the previous day is also useful – at a glance, you can see if it’s warmer or colder today than yesterday.

Radar with prediction: where precipitation will move in an hour

Below the measurement overview, you’ll find an interactive radar that displays the current development of precipitation in real-time. This is nothing new – most weather apps have radar. The difference is that In-počasí now offers a one-hour prediction.

In practice, this means that if you see approaching rain on the radar, you can tap once to see where it will move in 15, 30, or 60 minutes. This is useful, for example, before a bike trip or if you want to know if you’ll make it to the store before it starts raining.

Meteo-strips: a quick overview of when it rains and when the sun shines

Another new feature is called meteo-strips and solves a practical problem: how to quickly find out at what time of day it will rain. Classic graphs with a precipitation curve are accurate but less intuitive. Meteo-strips function as a colored bar with a timeline – grey = cloudy, blue = rain, yellow = sun.

At a glance, you can see that, for example, from 14:00 to 16:00 it will be overcast, but after 17:00 it will clear up. Or that it will be dry in the morning, but a shower will come in the afternoon. It’s similar to the Windy app.

Daily summaries from meteorologists

Every day, meteorologists prepare a brief text overview that summarizes the current weather development. It’s not automatically generated text, but a truly human-written summary in the style of “today will remain overcast with showers, cloud cover decreasing from the evening, sunny tomorrow”.

Completely new design, but still clear

The original In-počasí felt outdated – functional, but graphically on par with apps from 2015. The new version received a modern look with an emphasis on clarity. Key information is visible immediately upon opening, while details are hidden in expandable cards.

An interesting feature is the quick overview of locations – if you follow the weather in multiple places (e.g., at home in Prague and at a cottage in the Jeseníky Mountains), you see them all at once on one screen. You don’t have to switch between locations, just scroll.

Free and ad-free – a rarity these days

Most weather apps either contain ads or offer premium features for a subscription. In-počasí is completely free and ad-free for all users. The developers from InMeteo finance the application through commercial services for companies (for example, they provide meteorological data for logistics or agriculture).

What’s next?

According to the developers, the new core of the application is ready for rapid addition of further features. In the coming months, they promise intelligent notifications that will alert users to significant weather changes – such as a sudden drop in temperature, strong winds, or an approaching thunderstorm.
