Information surrounding the Xiaomi 18 series is starting to pile up, and this time it’s directly targeting what the brand has been selling very well for a long time – cameras. According to new leaks, Xiaomi is preparing a big leap for the entire series specifically regarding cameras, and for the most expensive model, it will opt for the latest generation of LOFIC technology.

A leaker, who goes by Kartikey Singh on the X network, claims that the entire series, not just its top model, will receive a significant photography package. Individual models are expected to differ mainly in the technology of the main sensor. This is how the camera distribution across the series is expected to look, according to the leak.

The common denominator is therefore a pair of 200Mpx sensors – main and periscopic – which the brand is reserving for all three phones. The difference between the Pro and Pro Max models is reportedly not in resolution, but in the generation of LOFIC technology.

What exactly is LOFIC and why is Xiaomi building on it?

We already encountered this technology in detail with this year’s Xiaomi 17 Ultra, which we thoroughly tested. In short, it’s a hardware solution that extends the dynamic range of images. The sensor has a capacitor next to the photodiode, into which excess charge can flow in very bright backlighting. In practice, this means the camera doesn’t have to choose between details in highlights or shadows – it can capture both simultaneously.

While the Xiaomi 18 Pro is expected to get LOFIC in its basic form, the top-tier Pro Max is said to deploy a new generation, LOFIC 3.0, which the leaker describes as significantly improved. What exactly makes the new version better is not yet clear.

Xiaomi 18 Pro Max will not avoid a price increase

In addition to the camera, the Pro Max is expected to offer the rest of the flagship features. A 2nm Snapdragon, a larger battery with 100W charging, wireless charging, and full water resistance are anticipated. Compared to the cheaper Pro model, it is also expected to have thinner bezels and a sharper display.

However, the brand will charge for this. According to the leaker, the prices of the entire series are expected to increase by about 10 percent, and the Pro Max will reportedly climb to the level of this year’s Xiaomi 17 Ultra. However, this is currently expected to apply mainly to China; no one knows yet what European prices will be.

Will there be a Xiaomi 18 Ultra after all?

The second part of the leaks revolves around the top-tier model, which had been missing from previous plans for a long time. Because of this, there were speculations that Xiaomi 18 Ultra had been completely scrapped by the manufacturer. However, according to Chinese informant Digital Chat Station, who spoke on the Weibo network, the project is not dead yet – development was reportedly only paused for some time.

Work on the 200Mpx 1″ format sensor, which is associated with the Ultra model, is also expected to continue. However, it should be added that this is currently the word of a single leaker, and with such a long-delayed phone, the final decision may still be far off.
