The Gemini app has finally arrived on Windows. This handy shortcut will make your work easier

Google is expanding its AI assistant literally everywhere, and now it’s adding another door – a standalone Gemini app for Windows. You can open it directly from the desktop with a keyboard shortcut, without having to interrupt your ongoing work.

Today, you can find Gemini in your browser, on your phone, and across Google’s services. However, a standalone window was missing on Windows computers – a gap the company is now filling. Following its April launch on macOS, which we wrote about in the spring, the same desktop client is now coming to Windows. The app itself doesn’t compute anything at all – all the work is done by Google’s cloud.

What does the Gemini app for Windows offer?

The main attraction is the Alt + Space keyboard shortcut, which you can use to invoke Gemini over any window. Google gives examples like quickly verifying a fact in an open document or getting a few ideas for a presentation title – you get advice and immediately return to your work.

Inside the app, you’ll find everything you know about Gemini from the web. Longer and multi-step tasks can be handed over to the Gemini Spark agent, who has access to your connected apps, or, according to Google, you can have a project summary compiled directly from Gmail and Google Drive. However, this is not yet available in the Czech Republic or other European countries, and Google has not specified when we can expect it.

Content creation will also be available – directly from the desktop, you can generate images via Nano Banana and videos via the Gemini Omni model.

On Mac, Gemini Spark can also work with files stored directly on the computer. This capability is currently missing on Windows, but according to Google, it is expected to arrive soon.

Is it really a full-fledged application?

Visually, however, it is essentially a web version of Gemini wrapped in a standalone window with a sidebar for Notebooks and conversation history. Google describes the app as “lightweight and quiet,” stating that it won’t slow down the computer.

So don’t expect many native desktop features yet – image and video generation looks the same in the app as in the browser. However, the company promises that more truly desktop capabilities will be added gradually.

How much does it cost and where can you download Gemini?

The app itself and basic Gemini features are free. However, for advanced features – such as automation via Spark or connecting the Gemini Omni model for video editing – you will need a paid Google AI subscription.

The app is available globally for Windows 10 and 11 and can be downloaded from gemini.google/desktop, where you can also find the Mac version.
