While the Xiaomi 15 Ultra has been on sale for less than half a year in our country, the Chinese manufacturer is already intensively working on its successor, and according to reliable information leaks, we can look forward to a true revolution in mobile photography. The Xiaomi 16 Ultra is reportedly set to offer a variable telephoto lens with 200 Mpx resolution, which would be an absolute breakthrough in the smartphone field.

Renowned leaker Digital Chat Station, who has a track record of confirmed predictions, has provided specific details about the camera system of the upcoming flagship model. If his information is confirmed, Xiaomi would be only the second manufacturer (after Sony) to introduce true optical zoom technology with seamless focal length transitions – but with significantly higher resolution than its Japanese competitor.

Fewer Lenses, More Possibilities

Unlike the current Xiaomi 15 Ultra model, which features four cameras on the rear, its successor is expected to switch to a triple setup. However, this setup should offer even greater versatility. According to available information, the system will include:

  • Main camera with a 1″ sensor and a medium focal length
  • Ultrawide-angle lens with yet-unspecified parameters
  • Variable telephoto lens with a 200Mpx sensor and seamless optical zoom

The latter camera mentioned should replace the current pair of separate telephoto lenses (3× and 4.3×) and elevate mobile photography capabilities to an entirely new level. The seamless optical zoom is expected to operate between two as-yet-unspecified focal lengths, while at higher magnifications (reportedly up to 10×), it should utilize high-resolution digital cropping technology.

Leica and New Software

The collaboration with the legendary German brand Leica will continue with the new generation. Xiaomi is reportedly preparing a completely redesigned camera application user interface with an emphasis on professional features and easier workflows. Color calibration according to Leica standards, portrait algorithms, and optimization for the new variable telephoto lens are also expected to be improved.

The expected improvements will also bring better portrait processing with an emphasis on subject sharpness and background separation. The company will also likely focus on software optimization to maximize the potential of the new variable telephoto lens.

Competition Never Sleeps

Xiaomi will not be the only manufacturer preparing a revolution in mobile photography. According to weekend information leaks, Apple might also implement similar technology in the upcoming iPhone 17 Pro.

If the information about the 200Mpx sensor is indeed confirmed, Xiaomi would gain a significant competitive advantage – such high resolution could deliver exceptional quality even with considerable digital magnification, which follows after reaching maximum optical zoom.

When Can We Expect It?

Although there have been speculations in recent days about an earlier release, most sources still anticipate the unveiling of the Xiaomi 16 Ultra in December 2025, which aligns with the traditional release schedule for Ultra models. Thus, the official unveiling is still relatively far off, and the company may change its plans several times.

There were also speculations about the possibility of attachable magnetic lenses, but according to the latest reports, this technology is not stable enough. Instead, Xiaomi’s research and development is focusing on refining core imaging functions and improving the user experience.
