This will be appreciated by everyone! Google Messages gets a very useful improvement

Have you ever tried to find a photo someone sent you half a year ago in the Messages app? Then you know that the current search is more of a lottery than a tool. Google is apparently working on it – a completely new interface has been revealed in the test version.

The Bar Moves Down

The first and most noticeable change is purely ergonomic. The search bar moves from the top edge of the screen to the bottom, where your thumb can reach without having to shift your grip on the phone. For today’s phones with a diagonal over six and a half inches, this is not a cosmetic change, but a quite significant difference in usability.

The second change concerns what you see before you start typing. The current version offers a series of narrow labels with categories at the top edge. These are to be replaced by large preview areas displaying images and videos directly from your conversations. Instead of searching by word, you can simply look.

Don’t Rely on It Yet

The new interface has been successfully activated in a test build of the app, but it is not displayed to regular users and Google has not said anything about it yet. We don’t know the timeline or if the feature will even arrive in this form – for hidden options in beta versions, it’s true that some of them end up in the trash.

This, however, fits into a broader trend. Google Messages has undergone a complete visual redesign according to the Material 3 Expressive language over the past year, and search remained one of the last parts untouched by the change. It was expected that its turn would come. That it will be a useful change and not just different shades and rounded corners, is a pleasant surprise.
