Xiaomi is reportedly preparing a small tablet with OLED. It targets the iPad Mini

Small tablets with flagship specifications are booming in China, but there’s one problem — the vast majority still have ordinary LCDs. Today, practically the only exceptions are the Oppo Pad Mini and RedMagic Astra. However, according to leaks, that’s about to change, as Xiaomi is targeting this category.

Not Redmi, but a full-fledged Xiaomi

While the company already offers compact tablets in the form of the Redmi K Pad series with an 8.8-inch diagonal, these rely on LCDs and focus mainly on performance. According to Digital Chat Station, the new addition is expected to be a full-fledged Xiaomi model, dimensionally based on the new Xiaomi 18 Fold foldable, and feature narrow bezels. The second leaker, known as Smart Pikachu, claims that work on the device has already begun.

What is known so far?

And that’s where the information ends. Apart from the display type and premium ambitions, practically nothing is known about the device. There’s talk of a “desired chip,” which some observers interpret as a reference to Xiaomi’s own Xring O3 processor — which we recently reported to surpass even the new Apple A20 Pro in multi-core performance. However, this is just an estimate, not confirmed information.

If it comes to fruition, the tablet would face a battle with the upcoming iPad Mini 8. The latter is expected to get an 8.4-inch OLED, but only with a 60 Hz refresh rate — which would open quite wide doors for Xiaomi, as almost everyone in this class can offer a smoother display today. The catch remains the same as always: devices with Xring chips are currently sold by Xiaomi exclusively in China.
