Photos and videos from phones accumulate, cloud subscriptions gradually become more expensive, and security camera footage often ends up on foreign servers. This is precisely the situation that the Xiaomi NAS addresses – a home network storage device that keeps your data at home. The new product, literally translated from Chinese, is called Smart Storage and is Xiaomi’s first device of its kind. The company has now launched pre-orders for it, with official sales starting on August 27. However, for now, it’s only available on the domestic Chinese market.

Xiaomi NAS Specifications

In terms of hardware, it’s a classic two-bay NAS. According to the manufacturer, it can handle a maximum of 60 TB (two 30 TB drives) and accommodates both 3.5″ and 2.5″ hard drives. All three retail versions come pre-equipped with Western Digital Red drives, a series built specifically for continuous operation in storage devices. Inside, 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of system storage power its operation, and the body is made of a solid aluminum frame.

For connectors, Xiaomi lists one USB-A 3.0, one HDMI 1.4, and one 2.5GbE network port. The faster 2.5-gigabit Ethernet is a welcome addition – for home NAS devices, gigabit is still common today. According to the company, the device also functions as a central gateway for smart homes, and the connection of Xiaomi devices is supposed to be up to three times faster thanks to it (however, this is a manufacturer’s claim, not an independently verified figure).

What features will the NAS offer?

This is where it becomes clear who the storage is primarily intended for. It will offer Xiaomi phone owners a full device backup and complete history from the Chinese communication app WeChat – both, however, require HyperOS 3.0 or newer. You can connect up to four Mi Home cameras to the NAS and store footage locally instead of in a paid cloud, for up to 360 days back. Data can then be shared by the whole family; the storage can handle up to 16 accounts.

Also included is remote access from mobile, PC, and TV via its own application, with a free transfer speed of up to 40 Mb/s. Xiaomi also promises smarter features: an AI album with automatic photo sorting and searching, or movie management that finds posters and ratings based on file names and organizes them into a clear video library. The built-in player supports 4K HDR10, subtitles, wireless mirroring, and HDMI output.

Price and Availability

Prices in China start at 2,699 yuan for the 4 TB variant, which is approximately 8,300 CZK. The 8 TB version costs 3,499 yuan (around 10,800 CZK), and the top-end 16 TB model is 5,499 yuan, or approximately 16,900 CZK. Compared to the July crowdfunding price, which started at 2,299 yuan, interested buyers will pay quite a bit more for the individual versions.

The biggest question mark currently hangs over availability. The Smart Storage is sold exclusively in China, and its most useful features are tied to the Xiaomi ecosystem and the HyperOS system. The company has not confirmed an official arrival in the Czech Republic, and given its ties to Chinese services, I would not count on it for now. Anyone who wants to build their own private cloud at home right away would rather opt for established brands like Synology or QNAP, which are commonly sold here.

Would you switch to a Xiaomi NAS for home backup if it arrived in the Czech Republic?
