A few days before the important Meta Connect 2025 conference, a video briefly appeared on YouTube, prematurely revealing the company’s biggest hardware novelty. Meta Ray-Ban Display – that’s what the new smart glasses with a built-in display, which Meta is developing under the codename “Hypernova,” could be called. The video quickly disappeared, but the internet doesn’t forget.

The leaked footage shows glasses with a monocular heads-up display (HUD) positioned above the right eye. The video demonstrates practical functions such as navigation with map data directly in the field of view, real-time text translation, replying to messages, and of course, voice control using Meta AI. All of this looks like scenes from a sci-fi movie, but this time it’s a real product.

EMG wristband instead of air gestures

An interesting part of the system is a special wristband using sEMG technology (surface electromyography). It can interpret electrical signals from your muscles and convert them into commands for the glasses. The video shows how a user “writes” a reply to a message with just hand movements – without the need for a physical keyboard or waving hands in the air.

Meta previously called this type of control a “neural wristband” when introducing the Orion AR concept. The technology works by sensing microscopic electrical impulses that your brain sends to your hand muscles. Even if you barely move your hand, the wristband captures your intention and converts it into a digital command.

Design gave way to features

The new glasses are significantly thicker than the current generation of Meta Ray-Ban, especially in the temple area. According to earlier reports, partner EssilorLuxottica (Ray-Ban’s parent company) had an issue with this design requirement – they wanted to maintain the elegant look of classic sunglasses. The resulting compromise is evident: the glasses still look like Ray-Bans, but at first glance, they reveal their technological essence.

Incidentally, a second pair of smart glasses also appeared in the video – the Oakley “Sphaera” model with a camera placed on the bridge. Meta may have accidentally revealed two new products at once.

Price like a premium smartphone

According to earlier speculations, the new glasses with a display should cost around 800 dollars, which is roughly 16,500 Czech crowns without tax.

Originally, Ray-Ban glasses with a display were expected to arrive in 2026. However, the timing of the leak and the upcoming Meta Connect conference (September 17, 2025) suggest that Mark Zuckerberg has a surprise up his sleeve and will introduce the product sooner.

Competition is also preparing

Meta is not the only one betting on smart glasses. Google and Samsung are working on the Android XR platform, with Samsung set to introduce a headset codenamed “Project Moohan” this year. Smart glasses with Android XR should follow next year.

While Meta has opted for partnerships with fashion brands and a gradual evolution from camera-equipped glasses to display-equipped glasses, competitors might come directly with a more advanced solution. The question remains who can solve the fundamental problems of this category: battery life, weight, and price.

The official unveiling of Meta Ray-Ban Display is expected on Wednesday, September 17, during Mark Zuckerberg’s keynote. If the leaked information corresponds to reality, we could finally see smart glasses that don’t feel like a technological curiosity but rather a useful everyday assistant.

What do you think about Meta’s upcoming glasses?
