ChatGPT has received a memory upgrade again. How will you experience it in practice?

  • OpenAI is deploying a new memory architecture for ChatGPT that better remembers and connects information from previous conversations
  • The memory now updates itself over time, so ChatGPT will know that your trip or plan has ended
  • Paying users in the USA are receiving the improvements first; they will arrive for the free tier in the coming weeks

One of the things that makes ChatGPT more useful every year, besides better models, is its memory. The more the chatbot knows about you, the less you have to introduce yourself from scratch in each new conversation. OpenAI is now improving the memory again. It should remember more precisely, connect contexts better, and most importantly, keep up with the times.

Memory that ages with you

The new system builds on a feature OpenAI calls Dreaming. This is a background process that, since last year, automatically extracts essential information from your conversations without you having to explicitly say “remember this.” The version being deployed this year is designed to handle this more precisely and computationally efficiently.

The biggest novelty is the ability to keep memory current. OpenAI demonstrates this with an example of a trip to Singapore. Older systems remembered that the user was going there but didn’t know when they returned from the trip. ChatGPT then continued to advise as if you were still on the other side of the world. The new architecture will automatically rewrite the note from “you’re going to Singapore in July” to “you were in Singapore in July 2026” and return to recommendations for your home.

Furthermore, you will see an overview of what ChatGPT remembers about you in one place. You can edit, supplement, or delete the summary and directly tell the chatbot which topics to bring up and when.

What will this be good for?

In practice, it’s mainly about not having to introduce yourself repeatedly. You’ll state your photography equipment once, and when you ask about compatible accessories, you’ll immediately get tailored recommendations. You’ll mention you’re a vegetarian, and food tips will reflect that. ChatGPT also knows you’re back home, so instead of restaurants from the visited city, it will offer those in your vicinity.

Subscribers of Plus and Pro in the USA are receiving the improvements first. They will arrive in other countries and for the free tier (plus the Go plan) in the coming weeks. The fact that OpenAI is opening memory to non-paying users was made possible by reducing computational demands to approximately one-fifth. At the same time, the memory capacity for paying users is increasing.

For anyone who uses ChatGPT daily, this is a welcome improvement in convenience. The other side of the coin is obvious: the more the chatbot remembers, the more it holds about you in one place. This makes the ability to review and clean up the summary whenever you want even more important.

Do you want ChatGPT to remember more and more about you?
