Google’s Live Translate interprets speech almost without delay and understands Czech. Its launch will apparently be even more convenient soon. A widget has appeared in the app’s code, allowing you to launch live interpretation with a single tap directly from your phone’s home screen.

The Android Authority website discovered the new addition in an analysis of the Google Translate app. Similar findings in the code indicate what the company is preparing, but they are not a guarantee in themselves – the feature may still change or never reach end-users.

With the widget, you’ll launch interpretation directly from the home screen

The widget is designed to sit directly on the home screen and offer a launch prompt along with the selected target language. Once you tap it, live interpretation will start without you having to open the app itself. For travelers, this is the main attraction: at an airport counter or in a restaurant, a single tap is enough, and you immediately hear the translation.

Furthermore, according to the code, directly from the widget, you can mute the microphone, stop interpretation, or switch the language. There’s also an option for where the audio should go – whether to the speaker or discreetly only to the phone’s earpiece. This listening mode, where you hear the translation directly in your ear, is one of the most useful features of live translation on Android.

For now, the widget has one significant drawback

One limitation is worth mentioning. According to the discovered code, the widget currently only translates what the other party says into your language – the opposite direction, meaning converting your words into the other person’s speech, is missing. Whether this will remain the case in the final version remains to be seen.

The code also hints at a second upcoming feature: background interpretation. Google is apparently working on ensuring that translation continues even if you leave the app, and it could be controlled directly from notifications. However, take this with a grain of salt for now – these are lines of code, not a finished feature.

Live Translate is built on the Gemini 3.5 model, handles over seventy languages including Czech, and interprets speech fluently, almost without delay. The widget would turn it into a one-tap feature – exactly what you’ll appreciate when traveling. However, we currently do not know exactly when it will reach users.
