Today’s version arranges saved credit and debit cards into a horizontal carousel at the very top of the main screen. You scroll between cards by swiping sideways, and you only ever see a narrow strip of adjacent cards at the edge. The more cards you collect, the more finger swiping it takes to find the right one. The rest of the area remains for tickets, passes, and other IDs.

The new layout instead arranges cards one below the other in a vertical list. You will see all of them on one screen and can access the desired one with a single tap instead of scrolling. In Apple Wallet, this tap brings the card to the forefront and prepares it for payment; Google’s upcoming solution will very likely work the same way. This is especially noticeable when operating with one hand – you can move the most frequently used cards down to where your thumb can comfortably reach.

According to initial screenshots, the vertical list will not stretch across the entire homepage, but will open as a separate layer invoked from a smaller element on the home screen – indicated by the close cross. This will tidy up the app’s main screen and keep tickets, passes, or loyalty cards readily available. Furthermore, cards should still be rearrangeable, and one of them can be set as default.

This is not the only visual change this year – the tickets and passes themselves recently underwent a transformation, now stretching across the entire display, which we wrote about separately.

Who will see the new feature first?

The redesigned list is currently only visible to a fraction of users and is rolling out in waves, reportedly first outside the United States. The change was reported by 9to5Google, with reports also surfacing over the weekend on Reddit and X – for example, from Japan or the Dominican Republic. Officially, no one from Google has confirmed it yet, so it is unclear whether this is a gradual rollout or just a test on a narrow group before a wider launch.

In recent months, the app has gained several new features – from adding physical transit cards to payment history from smartwatches. The new card arrangement would thus fit into a longer series of improvements.
