Is your O2 internet not working? You're not alone, the operator is experiencing issues

Monday morning started unpleasantly for some O2 customers. The operator is experiencing an outage of both fixed and mobile internet, and it’s not a problem with a single router. It affects me personally too: my fixed connection at home isn’t working, and mobile data via 5G isn’t functioning either. What’s strange is that the internet isn’t completely dead. Seznam.cz or Gmail load, but a large portion of other websites do not.

A thousand reports in less than half an hour

Before 9 AM, the monitoring server Vypadky24 recorded approximately one hundred reports; by 21 minutes past 9 AM, there were already over 1,100. People most frequently report non-functional internet and mobile connectivity, and to a lesser extent, television. On the competing website Vypadky.com, the first reports appeared shortly before 9 AM, and the avalanche came between 9:10 AM and 9:30 AM. Complaints are coming from Prague, Brno, Olomouc, Přerov, Jihlava, Příbram, and Frýdek-Místek, so it is clearly a network-wide issue, not a local fault.

Some things work, some don’t

Users describe the same situation: the connection appears active, but most pages won’t load. Some report non-functional O2 TV and online games, while connection via corporate VPN works. This points more towards issues with DNS (a system that translates website addresses into server numbers) or with traffic routing within the operator’s network. The fact that some websites are working might be because devices have their addresses stored from before, or there’s a different path to them. However, this is not yet a confirmed cause.

What you can try

Restarting your router or phone won’t help with an outage on the operator’s side. If it’s truly a DNS issue, manually changing the DNS server might help. On Android, in network settings, you’ll find the Private DNS item, where you can enter, for example, dns.google or one.one.one.one. The exact location varies by manufacturer. On a computer or router, addresses like 8.8.8.8 (Google) or 1.1.1.1 (Cloudflare) can be used. VPN might also help some. However, if the problem is with routing, none of these tips will work, and all that’s left is to wait.
