Sennheiser Momentum 5 Wireless offer better ANC and a replaceable battery. How much do they cost in the Czech Republic?

Prominent audio technology manufacturer Sennheiser has introduced a new generation of wireless headphones for the most demanding users. The new Momentum 5 Wireless retains the sound signature and battery life of its predecessor, but adds spatial audio, more effective noise cancellation, and most importantly, a battery that you can replace yourself at home in a few minutes. They will be available on our market for 9,990 CZK.

Sound from a 42mm driver and lossless transmission via aptX Lossless

Reproduction is handled by a 42mm dynamic driver, which Sennheiser manufactures at its plant in Tullamore, Ireland, and whose design is based on the legendary HD 600 headphone series. The tuning aims for a full sound with dynamic bass, natural vocals, and plenty of detail in the recording.

The new model has received Hi-Res Audio certification and utilizes Snapdragon Sound technology with support for codecs up to aptX Lossless. When paired with a compatible device, it can wirelessly transmit music in lossless quality. Furthermore, you can adjust the sound profile in the Sennheiser Smart Control Plus app, which offers an an eight-band equalizer, custom presets, and a Sound Personalization system to tailor the sound to your taste.

Noise cancellation up to three times more effective against human voices

Active noise cancellation has seen significant improvement. MOMENTUM 5 Wireless have twice as many microphones for ANC and transparent mode compared to the previous generation, totaling four on each side. This makes them more effective against monotonous engine noise and ambient voices. Specifically for human voices, Sennheiser states up to three times higher effectiveness than their predecessor.

The same microphone system also improves voice pickup during phone calls and video calls. Conversely, when you need to hear your surroundings for a moment, you can switch to transparent mode without having to remove the headphones from your head.

Dolby Atmos spatial audio with head tracking

Spatial audio is a new feature in the series. After installing the initial firmware update via the Smart Control Plus app, the headphones will enable Dolby Atmos with head tracking. For movies, series, and music mixed in a spatial format, the soundstage then relates to the space in front of you and remains more stable when you turn your head, which enhances the sense of immersion.

However, the feature is not unconditional: you need Dolby Atmos content and a source device that supports it. Sennheiser also anticipates further development. The headphones ship with Bluetooth 5.4, but the hardware is also ready for a later update to Bluetooth 6.0 via firmware.

Replace the battery yourself in a few minutes

The main draw is the combination of battery life and accessibility. MOMENTUM 5 Wireless can manage up to 57 hours of playback on a single charge, even with ANC enabled. Inside is a 700 mAh battery, which you can replace yourself if needed. To open the relevant part, you only need a small Phillips screwdriver, and the entire replacement takes a few minutes.

This means the headphones don’t have to go to service after years just because of a worn-out battery. The earpads are also replaceable, so MOMENTUM 5 Wireless can stay in shape even after long periods of daily wear. The carrying case is 20% smaller than the previous generation, and Sennheiser has eliminated plastics from the packaging itself. The package includes a USB-C charging cable and an analog cable with a 3.5mm jack for connecting to a laptop or an in-flight entertainment system.

Price and availability

According to the press release, Sennheiser MOMENTUM 5 Wireless will soon appear in the Czech Republic in the distributor’s e-shop, Pantershop, and at selected partners. The price is set at 9,990 CZK (399 €). There will be three colors to choose from: black, white, and Denim blue.

At 9,990 CZK, the MOMENTUM 5 Wireless are aimed at the highest class of wireless headphones, so it’s not an impulsive purchase. However, the price is justified by what competitors often don’t address: replaceable battery and earpads, and hardware ready for newer Bluetooth, extend the lifespan far beyond the standard warranty period. For those who keep electronics for years and dislike discarding them due to a single worn-out component, this category offers a rare proposition.

A few things are good to keep in mind. Lossless transmission via aptX Lossless can only be utilized with a source that supports Snapdragon Sound, so iPhone owners and some Android users won’t benefit from it. Furthermore, Dolby Atmos spatial audio only works with supported content and devices. If you are mainly looking for noise cancellation for airplanes and decent sound and don’t care about these features, you can find cheaper alternatives. However, for the demanding listener who travels and plans to wear headphones for years, the new generation of MOMENTUM makes sense.
